Tonks stopped and actually considered him. It had never really occurred to her that he might have considered Obliviating her, as well. Which meant that while he'd known her intentions right off the bat, she'd never had the slightest clue as to what he'd been really thinking. Huh. Tonks cocked her head, almost as though she were measuring him up. A mystery, indeed. Still she smirked and then smiled, "No, we never will." He'd made it clear to her he wanted those memories, risk or not. If they were the one thing she could give him then who would she be to try and take them? She closed her eyes playfully when he kissed her nose, laughing slightly before looking at him again, "I'll always want you, and I'll always need you." She sobered slightly and looked away, "This war.. If it becomes that.. Things are going to get ugly and I can't pretend to know what's going to happen, or what I'll do. I just want you to know that no matter what happens, I love you, and always will. Things are going to change and things-- bad things-- are going to happen, I just want to you know that no matter what I say or what I do.. The way I feel about you will never change."
Tonks shook her head quickly then stopped, turning in his lap until she was straddling him so she could face him full on. "Yes, you do have me." She cupped his face in her hands until she could look him in the eyes, her expression grave, "It doesn't matter how much stuff there is between us. None of it matters and none of it can ever change the way I feel about you. War or no war, wife or no wife, family or no family, you will always have me." Her voice faltered slightly and she looked down, "Even when we can't physically be together, even when we're apart.. You're all I'm thinking of, all that matters. You'll always have me."
Her eyes widened and her heart seemingly stopped in her chest when Tonks realised what it was, exactly, Rodolphus was saying. What he was implying. It broke her heart that for a second, she could believe. It broke her heart that for a second it all seemed real. Tonks looked down and away from him then, unable to meet his eyes. Being with him, truly being with him. No boundaries, nothing to hide from, nothing to run from. It truly was too good to be true. In the end the fact of the matter was what did she have to offer him? What could she give him? She'd pieced the puzzle together from stories her mother would tell of her old world in High Society, in the Pureblood's society. Everything had a price, be it in money or status. Neither of which she had. In the end, even without the war, he was still a high ranking Pureblood and she was still a Halfblood Black with no name and, in their eyes, no worth. Tonks sighed, pressing his hand to her heart and looking up at him, "I'm grateful to have you at all, just as you are. And I would take less if it meant I could still see you, be with you. I want to make you happy, to be here for you. But beyond that.." She looked down, then, "What do I really have to offer you? What can I really give you? You have.. So much, don't--" She shook her head, "Don't throw it away on my account." She was and always would be an Auror, and all that could offer was a life of uncertainty and waiting until the one case finally did her in. The one battle, the one curse, and it was all over. This was not a life one offered the one they loved.
At least when he wrapped his arms around her, she could pretend. She could enjoy the safety she felt against him, how the whole world and all it's worries seemed like such a far off and distant memory. Even if it was just fleeting. Tonks felt a knot in her chest loosen when he sighed against her and she relaxed against him in turn, wrapping her arms around him and drawing her hands up his spine to tangle in his hair.
