Rodolphus listened to her, frowning curiously and shaking his head when she'd finished. "No," he said quietly when she was done. "That doesn't make you a bad person. It makes you a loving person. Which brings me back to my conclusion that I just... don't deserve you. I don't deserve you wanting to save me rather than, say, the Potters. I'm the bad guy, here. I'm not supposed to be saved. And I want you to protect people. I want you to do whatever it takes for you to win this war. And try not to worry about me too much. If I know you're worrying about me, I'll know you're not paying attention to what you're doing which could put you in danger, and then I'll be worried too and that won't be good for either of us."
He stroked her cheek and shook his head. "I know you can't make the same promise. All I want you to promise me is that you'll be careful. It's going to get ugly in the next few weeks. I know you won't agree to just letting me take you somewhere safe and staying there until everything is over, so I'm just going to have to accept that you'll be out there, risking your life to safe people. I just want to know that you won't do anything stupid and impulsive."
He tilted her chin up and closed his eyes, kissing her gently. "And... same here," he whispered. "I love you, and I'd do anything to protect you."
