Tonks looked to him. Wide eyed, terrified and trembling. "Yes," she swallowed, her breath coming uneven as the gravity of her words became harder and harder to ignore. "Anything so long as you're okay." She shook her head then and her whole body shook and she leaned against him, clinging to him. She was an Auror, she was meant to protect. Protect the public, protect the innocent, at all costs. And here she knew, deep in her heart, she'd sacrifice that for him. Anything for him. And that terrified her. Tonks hid her head against him, unable to meet his eyes, "Good? How can you possibly say that? I'm an Auror, I made a vow to protect and yet.. It shouldn't be this easy for me to break it. I shouldn't be so quick to just.. To just throw everything away. What the hell kind of an Auror does that make me? What kind of a person?" Her voice shook and she went quiet, fighting for a sense of control, "But I just.. I can't stand the thought of anything happening to you. I'd do anything to protect you." She did look up to him then, without pulling away, making no effort to hide the tumultuous feelings that clashed within her. "Anything." And she knew it was true. She'd sacrifice her vows, her position and even those she should be protecting for him. In the end she was no worse than the very people she fought. No, she was even worse than them. She was a hypocrite, and a traitor. And here he said she was too good.
Tonks smiled against him weakly, "Thank you. I know how difficult that must be for you." She couldn't bring herself to look at him, almost as though she were afraid if she did he'd be able to see right through her. "Thank you," she repeated. "I... wish I could make the same promise." It was unfair, she realised. He was risking so much for her, and even those she cared for, and yet she would have liked nothing more than to throw the most important person in his life into a cell in Azkaban.
