It was a good thing Mara allowed Remington to set her down, settling for his hand instead. He could have carried her, but he would have regretted it physically. He was still healing, and it was going to take time to get his strength back. Once he was himself again, he'd be happy to throw her into the air until she told him to stop. She was a cute kid. Not that he had a lot of experience with kids, but he liked Mara. She just made him nervous.
"Yeah, a beer would be good. I'm not driving, so you can keep 'em coming." And maybe throw in a few pain pills with the booze. That would help his legs right fast.
When Mara tried to climb into his lap, Remington didn't protest, because he didn't want to upset her or Riley, but he was grateful when his brother asked Mara to sit beside her uncle instead. Remington scooted to make room for her, not like she needed much. She promptly grabbed his arm to wrap it around her. Remington efforted an awkward smile. "Give me a few weeks.. and then you can sit on my lap.. okay?" A compromise. Maybe Remington would be more accustomed to having a kid climb on him by that time.
