It had been an obscenely early morning, filled with hasty decision and walking back to campus, calling a cab and packing things all before six. At the time it had felt cowardly, like he was skipping out on his family but by the time he checked into the hotel and laid himself out on the massive bed in the penthouse suite, Garret just felt... free. Calm. Like shackles had been broken, like he had been tethered down under water and he was free now. He could just leave and never look back if he wanted, even though in his note he'd promised he'd come back. There was more he'd wanted to say, needed to say, but it was left unsaid. And right now, it didn't matter. He'd needed to leave his life behind for a little while, and his family he was sure needed a break from him as well. He hadn't been himself, he'd had a dark cloud overhead, and surely none of them wanted to deal with that crap anymore. What good was he to them if he had nothing to offer?
So he had gotten away. And after sleeping most of the day, then ordering room service and showering and shaving and watching a game without someone (ie Max) leaping on his lap or making noise or trying to take over the couch, Garret felt like he hadn't felt in a long, long time- Good. No guilt, no pressure, no worries, just... himself. And he dressed to impress for his night out, because he was going to live his life the way he used to, before Mal and Rorie, hell before Lloyd even. Maybe he wasn't cut out for family life, even if it was an onconventional family. He was going to find out.
The bar was pretty slow, but that was no surprise considering it was Monday. Still, there were plenty of gorgeous people here, the women in particular. Most of the men here were with a date, but there were flocks of girls about looking for someone to take an interest. All except one lone redhead, who was off in a corner and seemed completely disinterested in the rest of the place. Smirking, Garret made his way over, determined to win her over with his charm. The closer he got, though, the more clear it became that this wasn't just some girl. This was a very familiar girl with a very familiar scowl, a family heirloom it seemed because all the McCafferties had identical ones. "Hey, little red," he said smoothly, sliding up beside her and flashing his bright, perfect grin. "Why the long face?"
