Who: Ada and Nate What: A concert! Where: Upscale club in Boston When: Friday night
Ada and Nate drove into Boston just after sundown. It had been months now since she'd been onstage, and her nerves were humming with a combination of excitement and anxiousness. In less than two hours, she would be onstage alone. It wasn't the first time she'd played a solo acoustic show, but it was a rare thing for her. The security that came with having a backing band to pick up for you if you messed up was gone for the moment, and add to that she was playing in an unfamiliar city in a club she'd never seen before... she was a little on edge.
That, and there was the whole drama over worrying about whether her engagement was falling apart, but... that was a conversation for another day and probably another person, since she doubted Nate wanted to discuss romantic matters at this particular moment.
Once at the club, they went into the backstage green room while the opening band played. A bartender came back to ask if either of them wanted anything, and she ordered a club soda with lime. It wasn't that she didn't drink any more, it was just that she drank with less frequency and in a lower quantity than she used to. It made it easier to keep from falling back into life-ruining habits if she didn't lose her judgment to alcohol.
"Thanks for coming with me," she said, smiling over at Nate. "I'm kind of nervous as it is. I should have walked out front to see how many people are here, but... it's Boston. Not exactly a city where I should draw a crowd. For all I know, I'll be playing to a mostly-empty room." Which would be depressing... but at least if she screwed up, no one would know any better!
