Who: Fenrir and Sydni
Where: The hallways
What: A statement of ideas or a threat?
When: Tuesday afternoon.
He was in an extremely unpleasant mood lately. First the incident with the cell phone, and now his hand was still throbbing from punching that metal man. He hadn't meant to lose his temper, but he just wasn't in the mood to have his teaching style questioned. That and he had been concerned about just how angry he had become, and the more he focused on his anger, the more it kept coming back full circle. It was lucky that the man had been made of metal, or he probably would have taken his head clean off. As it was, Fenrir had taken the worse end of the punishment and which made him more pissed that he hadn't walked away the victor.
And of course there was the fact that someone had not only entered, but messed with his room twice.
He stormed through the halls, brooding over the coming full moon and his inability to control his temper lately, trying to orient himself, dodging students left and right as they headed towards the dining hall. It was inevitable that he would run into someone, and he collided full force with a woman not nearly as large as himself, but which still sent him tripping over himself and onto the ground.
He propped himself on his arms, snarling and then barking out in anger "Watch where you're going Damnit!"
---
Sydni was preoccupied as she walked through the halls. Peyton concerned her. That girl seemed to be at the center of everything troublesome, and really, all Sydni wanted was to support her. It was hard to do when she had to be the authority figure, too. But Peyton wasn't her only concern. The brunette was still terrified of her new position as a professor. She was used to doing what she was trained for, and she had no real training as an educator. Just the content area knowledge. Not that she hadn't been devouring every book on education that she could.
It was because of this preoccupation that she didn't notice the larger man charging through the hallways. When the two collided, the smaller lycan backpedaled into a wall, preventing a fall. Moving forward quickly, she was about to help the man up, when he barked at her. Immediately, her eyes widened, and she drew back her hand and stepped back. Her natural timidity did not react well to conflict. But rudeness was one thing she never could take. Very softly, she protested, "I'm sorry, but you ran into me."
---
Ran into her? He had been walking, true very briskly, but walking very diligently and had managed to avoid the floods of students that had crossed his path. It was impossible in his mind that he had erred. He would not make such a stupid mistake. With a deep breath he pushed himself off the floor to his full height and stared at the woman who had accused him, softly as it may have been.
"Ran into you? Hah, if I did run into you, it would only be because you are so small that you cannot be seen. So either way you should have been watching where you were going."
He breathed in deep again when a peculiar scent hit him and he nearly coughed in surprise.
"Wolf, you are wolf! And you act so timid, hah! I would put you in your place if the director let us behave as our kind should."
---
The man's height intimidated her, but that didn't mean much. She was easily intimidated. Her posture clearly showed her timidity as she seemed to make herself smaller, though it wasn't entirely a physical act. At his words, however, a dumbfounded look crossed her face. Did he just...? What, was he seven?
Her look of surprise quickly turned to one of anger. One of the few things that outweighed her natural nervousness was her temper, and he had just pushed the wrong button. Opening her mouth to snap, What? Like animals?, she stopped herself just in time. As much as he deserved every sharp word, the students in hearing range did not. Some were born weres and they did not deserve her scorn. Instead, she retorted icily, "We obviously have different ideas of how our kind is 'supposed' to behave. Excuse me." And with that, she moved as if to continue on her way. As far as she was concerned, the conversation was over.
---
Oh that would not do. He was not going to let someone talk to him about wolf behavior, especially not another wolf, and certainly not one as timid as she acted. He moved himself into her way, aggressive but not trying to pick a fist fight. He'd already had one of those today.
"No, you obviously don't know how our kind is supposed to behave. If you're going to make a challenge, you better be willing to stand up for it. We do not just turn tail and try to run after making challenges. Humans do."
He put emphasis on the part about humans, since he could guess with reasonable certainty that she was not a born werewolf, if she had some crazy different idea on how they were supposed to act. No, there was no question in his mind how they were supposed to act. And he felt it his job to tell others how werewolves should behave.
---
Oh, he was gonna see the fire that usually hid behind her timid nature if he kept pushing those buttons. She wasn't liable to fight, outright, but she could definitely show some passion. "Just because I recognize that now is not the time nor place for an argument doesn't mean I won't stand up for what I believe in," she declared through gritted teeth. Unable to help herself, she growled slightly, deep in her throat as she took a step back, and then tried to walk around him again.
Beneath her anger, icy fear was creeping in. What if she lost it and killed again? She certainly was not experienced enough to shift outside the full, but could she if she were angry enough? This time, she moved more quickly. She wanted out, like a caged animal - she was caught somewhere between anger and terror.
---
He pushed himself in front of her again, enjoying this game. The fact that he was bringing out more of her inner beast delighted his own mostly wolfish self, seeing how far he could push her before she either snapped at him or turned tail and ran. He liked any chance to flex his alpha muscles, especially when it came to females. So just to push her buttons more he laughed loudly, causing a few confused stares from passing students.
"So, you do have a bit of fight in you. You're just afraid of it. Don't want to do anything in front of the students? Why? Afraid you can't control yourself?"
He weaved with her, keeping her from going the direction she wanted to go. He was having too much fun with this, even if it was more juvenile than he preferred. But nobody here understood that when he bit or hit someone, it was just being playful. So he had to stick to goading people. It wasn't trying to be cruel, it was just what he did. He had to be the top dog. So he leaned closer and lowered his voice so the other students wouldn't hear.
"Or is it more than that? Are you afraid of what you are? Are you one of those pathetic self loathing were's who haven't accepted there's no going back? So bent on being human that when the beast comes out you can't control it at all?"
---
Contrary to what he thought, everything but the growl was all Sydni. She had a naturally short fuse, which was exactly why she shied away from conflict. That, and her desire to keep attention elsewhwere. And really, if he wanted to impress her with his alpha-ness, this was not the way.
When he stepped in front of her again, she glared up at him. "Sir, I swim with sharks for a living. You don't frighten me. As for propriety in front of students, I think you should check yourself before you accuse me of anything." If she had any less control over her emotions she would have punctuated her statements with a physical act. As it was, she merely clenched her fists.
He might have thought he was being playful, but to the brunette, he was simply being cruel and unprofessional. And those last words were the pinnacle of cruelty. Her anger peaked, and her restraint had to give somewhere. Fighting back tears, she managed to spit out, "You know nothing about me. Don't talk as if you do." Even though the words were forced out, they were barely a whisper. And she tried yet again to walk around him. Her stubborness wouldn't let her turn tail and go in the other direction.
---
Now she was getting feisty and he almost felt bad for frustrating her. Almost. It wasn't about impressing anyone but himself, and he was doing that nicely. It was a marvelous feeling after his two altercations earlier in the day. His fist was still sore from his "fight."
he met her eyes as she stared at him and grinned. There was more fire in her than he'd given her credit for.
"If I wanted to frighten you I could. Believe me. But I like my position here and so long as I don't cause too many problems I get to keep it. Sharks are nothing. Just rows of teeth with a desire to eat. Have you ever seen a wolf pack hunt? Ever been a part of one? It's so...exhilarating." He let out a shiver to emphasize his point. "But the way you hide behind the students is annoying. We're preparing them for the real world aren't we? This is the real world for our kind."
He grinned a wicked grin and let his teeth turn razor sharp, childishly (though he wouldn't admit it to himself) exhibiting his own personal control over the beast within. He then leaned closer so he could return his response in a whisper as well. It wasn't a direct threat, though it was certainly a reminder that he knew more than she did. "I may not know anything about your human self, and I don't want to. But I know more about your wolf than you may ever. I know what it desires. I know what it hates. You may be human most days and you may despise me as well, but when the moon is full and your wolf takes over, I guarantee I could have you any way I wanted."
And with that he backed off, stepped to the side, let her escape. He felt he'd won with that final statement.
---
Most people mistook Sydni's meek nature for a lack of passion. Far from it. She had a passionate soul coupled with a private, quiet nature. It made her a person of contradictions and surprises, and it led many people to underestimate her.
To be honest, the lycan did desire the companionship of a pack. Being alone made it that much harder to learn control, and to simply deal with everything that had changed in her life. Perhaps that was why she had sought out Mikhail as a tutor - a way of forging a pack. But the way Fenrir described it repulsed her. He seemed to revel in what she saw were the dark parts of wolf nature: the aggression, the violence, the bloodlust. "Your perception is different from mine," she stated crisply. They clearly had different ideas on what the 'real world' was like. Sydni had the tendency to see things as they should be, not as they were.
His sudden transformation made her gasp, and her eyes widened as she took a step back. But her obstinacy kicked in and she took a step forward again, her expression turning determined. Very slowly, pausing between each word, she said, "You don't frighten me." As if she would back down - pfft. Of course, if she had waited a few seconds, she wouldn't have made such a statement. At his words, the bravado fell and her face turned ashen. Before she could even think to stop herself, her hand raised to slap his face. Whether it connected or not, she cried, "Bastard! I will tear you limb from limb if you come near me!" And she meant every word. With that, she made to leave, very quickly.
---
He let her slap him. Relished in the feel of the shockwave that travelled through his face, and it only made him grin more. It didn't hurt, not as much as punching metal had hurt, and not as much as forcing himself to not tear that girl apart earlier. This was something he wanted. To let her exhibit some of that wolf that he was goading. It caused him to speak louder than her probably should have, but he didn't care if the students heard, that was her priority.
"That's the spirit, stand up for yourself, with violence if necessary. You are more surprising than I gave you credit for."
He laughed and decided it was his time to walk away as well, but he had to let out one more sting.
"I'll see you when the moon is full. You'll have to tell me afterwards what seeing a dominant wolf during your shift does to you. I could tell you but that would ruin the surprise. And I haven't been in a pack for close to 80 years. Maybe I've forgotten. Maybe things have changed. Maybe it doesn't all end with the submissives throwing themselves at whichever dominants will take them. Times do change after all. Especially since this school is teaching you all to control those beastial urges of yours."
And with that he just stood grinning.
---
Sydni was not a violent person, and his words made her flush with embarrassment as she made her way down the hall. She shouldn't have hit him. But if he even came near her on the full... A low growl sounded in her throat just thinking about it. And whether he realized it or not, aside from the growl, that was all Sydni. Her temper was outright volatile when raised, but she rarely allowed it to get to that point. She hated conflict, and avoided it at all costs. He had forced her to stay, and her temper, and fear, had overwhelmed her good judgement.
As he called out to her, she could barely contain the shiver that shook her body. She was thoroughly repulsed, and honestly terrified. She needed to find someone to help her. And with that, she continued on her way to Mikhail's office.
