Who: James and Fisher
What: A Date
When: Saturday Night
Where: On the Town
Rated: Probably M
James wasn't nervous about this, which he found a little surprising. He had thought that he might be considering that this was his first real date with Fisher, aside from the one that was interrupted, and considering the things that he had planned and how... public tonight was going to be. But he wasn't at all nervous because he wasn't at all insecure about who he was. And that was nice. Maybe that meant that he was finally starting to piece together the things that were broken about him. Or maybe it was just because the week had been long and James was looking forward to tonight.
Talking to Devon was a chore, but he had done it. The conversation hadn't really gotten very far because he wasn't exactly sure how to talk to a five year old and the boy didn't do much talking back, but he had at least attempted it like Lloyd had suggested. And things seemed to be getting... easier between them. He seemed to be looking forward to moving into a larger place and having his own room. And last night, when he'd had a nightmare, something that James was discovering wasn't at all uncommon, he'd crawled into the bed with James and fallen asleep with his fingers curled in James' hair. It started to become evident at that exact moment in time why parents usually loved their children.
But tonight wasn't about Devon. It was about him and about Fisher and about having a good time. And Devon was safe. He was with Cissy whom he seemed to like and who was amazingly good with children as far as he could see. They were eating popcorn and watching Transformers when he'd left them and he felt okay with leaving him there. He'd then taken his time to get ready, shaving his face and fixing his hair and picking out the perfect outfit. He wore a pair of loose fitting jeans that were clean and well pressed, the perfect light shade of denim and exactly the right amount of worn in, a light pink dress shirt with a black and pink skinny silk tie, and a black sweater over top of that. The dress shirt wasn't tucked in, sleeves rolled up, the top few buttons left undone, and the tie was knotted but it hung loose, giving him that retro preppy look mixed with a more modern day twist. As always, he wore his black boots. they were the most comfortable shoes in the world.
Precisely at nine, he found himself in front of the school waiting for Fisher to come out. There was something else he had neglected to mention when he first came back from New York. That was that, while in New York, he'd bought a car since he'd decided that he'd probably need one with Devon around. It was a Hummer HX, in a color known as gun metal, which wasn't a very practical vehicle, but at least it was safe, and it wasn't like he did that much driving so gas mileage was the last of his concerns. It was in front of this vehicle that he stood waiting for his date to arrive looking better than he had in weeks. He'd actually slept last night. And the box that had been keeping him up at nights was presently the very last thing on his mind.
