Marlene hated coming to these events. She was a noble but honestly you probably couldn’t get anyone less ‘noble’ than her if you tried. Even her older sister was a better choice than she was, so why her parents still insisted on her going to these things was beyond her. Still, she supposed in the name of family she would make it work. Besides, it gave her the ability to spend more time with Peter which in her estimation was absolutely worth the ungodly boredom that came with all noble or royal events. Not to mention the obvious schmoosing that they did to each other pretending they weren’t really out to stab you in the back somehow. Fussing a little with her gown, Marlene found herself feeling so much more out of place than she usually did. Put her in ripped jeans or pants of some sort and a shirt (t-shirt or otherwise) and she was the most comfortable in the world. Even a non-fancy dress as she did in fact own a few of those. But put her in a gown, hair up and make-up on that accented her features, she felt so out of sorts she couldn’t stand it. God what Peter must think of her right now. “I really do appreciate you coming with me,” Marlene said as she turned to face Peter, her hand moving to gently wrap her fingers around his arm. “I couldn’t imagine someone more fun to be with.” She paused looking over him, obviously assessing him and how he was feeling or might be feeling or…well anything that might be going on with him. He was just tortured not long ago, and she did have this horrible habit of fussing over him. Actually, Marlene couldn’t remember a time she didn’t fuss over Peter. Even back in school, Marlene went out of her way for Peter. While she liked James, Remus and Sirius well enough, she bonded more closely with Peter. It was unfortunate that after they left school, they lost contact outside of owls for a time. Truth was that was more her fault than his considering she was traveling and trying to learn about every creature imaginable and made that her priority over everything else. She often wrote to him, even sending him different things from her travels, but rarely visited home. By the time she returned home, Peter had married, and she couldn’t blame him for it. He was happy, as far as she knew, and she was happy for him. Needless to say, when that marriage ended, Marlene tried to be there as best she could although what did you say to someone who’s life had fallen apart? At least now she didn’t have to feel guilty for the way she felt about him, even if she remained only his friend. “Are you feeling all right?” She asked suddenly worried about him. Even if he looked and was fine, Marlene didn’t want to do anything to make him worse. “We could get some air. I believe their gardens are this way. Narcissa usually has them lit up for events. Or we could leave if you’d rather?” |
