Tuesday was a great day. Beautiful. Birds singing, colors seemed brighter, and okay, maybe it was raining, but Delilah liked it when it rained when she had to go out. Rain meant she got to run errands unsupervised. Most days, leaving the house required permission from her step-mother, and unless it was something like lunch with any of the girls on a previously-established list of acceptable friends, leaving also generally required a chaperone. And Delilah did not like running errands with her step-mother. There were...a lot of expectations. But not when it rained. If they needed anything on a day it rained, Delilah got to go by herself. The lady of the house didn't like getting wet or stepping in puddles, you see, so if they needed something, Delilah was usually able to convince her to let her go fetch it herself, provided she didn't do it very often and didn't dilly-dally too much. This morning it was potions ingredients she needed--or, rather, potions ingredients were her excuse for getting out of the house by herself on this rainy day. She actually wouldn't need the ingredients for another week, but she really needed some fresh air and a walk by herself, so she told her step-mother that she needed some more ingredients for the cosmetic creams she made for her, collected the money, and left for Diagon. Despite her umbrella, the ends of her hair and robes were dripping by the time she stepped into the nearly-empty apothecary, but she didn't mind. Because it was a good day, and rain meant freedom. Knowing what she was looking for, Delilah scanned the shelves and examined the ingredients available to make sure she had the best quality she could find. "Excuse me," she called out without looking around for the shoppe assistant, "do you have any other shrivelfigs? I'm afraid these might not be fresh enough for what I need." Delilah turned around with one in her hand to show what she meant. |
