Could someone please explain what we just spent the last week watching, because it looked really messed up -- and did those people really die or is it a trick?

I'm not really having a good week -- or year, really. So being kidnapped kind of makes me cranky.
Could someone please tell me what's going on and direct me to a place to stay until I can figure out how to get out of here?
