The smallest of smiles curved up the edge of Calvin's face at the question. He, too, understood that this sort of fraternization while technically "on duty" was probably not the sort of thing to get into the habit of, but the Master was out, and the tasks of the day were largely easy ones. Besides, how often was it that a Clovennian, servant or not, took interest in anything regarding Aurellian culture? Mr. Brigant was, Calvin had been pleased to find, far more receptive and curious than some of his countrymen in this regard, and Calvin was happy to indulge him.
"Animals are certainly... employed in Aurelle. They're useful. And some are sacred, as you know." In keeping with Mr. Brigant's interest, Calvin also knew that he was generally more aware of Aurellian customs than most, so it wasn't a stretch to assume that he knew that there were at least some sacred animals. "But they aren't... kept as they seem to be in Clovenne. And cats in particular are..." he regarded the happily munching Chouette cautiously, "tricky. Our culture doesn't regard them as particularly trustworthy animals."
