Morrie noticed the us as well. She wasn't sure it had any particular weight or meaning, but nonetheless, it felt nice to feel like a part of something. It felt nice to know that Krishna felt that their temperaments and perspectives were aligned enough to be considered an us, particularly because she felt the same way. There weren't many people that she felt understood her, accepted even her less savory aspects of her character. Even Cal, though Morrie certainly believed that he treasured her, was just so very different from Morrie.
But Morrie didn't feel like she and Krishna were so different. Krishna hadn't been through what she had been through exactly, but he had been by her side through the worst of it. He had been the first to tend her immediately after the fire, and it had been a long, dark few weeks of recovery to follow. Even when she had been at her lowest, he hadn't left her side. Her memories of that time were clouded by the physical and emotional pain she had been in, certainly, but she remembered just how bad it had gotten. She remembered the very bleak and hopeless place she had gotten to, and she remembered that he had stayed with her until they got through it. She had felt humiliated an vulnerable about it and had considered distancing herself from Krishna, but even if she hadn't needed his ongoing medicinal help, she still wasn't sure she'd have been able to walk away from him, after all of that.
"Chaos can't be stopped, perhaps, but how to direct it to those who thrive under its reign? If you could figure that out, then I would much prefer my world to remain orderly. Can you arrange that, Krishna?" she asked with a wry smile. "No surprises, no drama... just a stable, reliable life?"
She had intended the questions to be light, teasing even, but once the words were out of her mouth, she found herself turning to look at him contemplatively. Stable and reliable might sound boring to others, but it was what she craved. A life where she was in control and didn't have to worry things wouldn't work out, didn't have to grieve loss after loss, didn't have to wonder if she would be left alone the moment she disappointed someone.
