Cas felt his muscles clench at the sound of the voice. The sharp pang of frustration and embarrassment in being caught caused him to drive the head of the shovel hard into the ground, more like he was erecting a flag than excavating a corpse. After a second's hesitation, he lifted the shovel, overturning another shovelful of earth from the burial plot.
"Doing what wrong?" he asked in a voice considerably deeper and gruffer than his usual tone. The stranger's tone didn't indicate she had any intent of stopping him, so it made more sense in the moment to try and preserve some sense of anonymity than anything else. In fact, the longer he thought on the woman's demeanor and comment, the more unclear her intent became.
