Court sighed and pulled the printed sheet from his now well-worn typewriter. It hadn't taken long to write the letter, but lost in his own thoughts, it had felt like ages. He looked over the words again, taking a drink from his scotch. They were about as good as he was ever going to make them.
To: Paul Du Salle,
Commander, Imperial Army Guards Corps
Copy To:
Commander, 1st Imperial Dragoon Guards Regiment
Office of the Imperial Army Department of Personnel
Office of the Imperial Army Chief of Staff
General,
It is with a heavy heart that I must inform you that I am resigning my commission as an Officer in the Imperial Army, effective immediately. After several months of reflection, I have determined that it would not best serve the interest of the Army, the Guards Corps, or my Regiment for me to return to active duty. I wish that I could blame the entire situation on my lingering injury, for which I have been on convalescence, but that would not be accurate.
Following the destruction of my squadron in its last engagement, I have critically analyzed my last few years of service. I cannot in good conscience claim that I have felt fulfilled in my life as an Army Officer. While it is a profession I am quite skilled at, and while I did take great pride in being a leader of the men under my command, those men are now gone, whether scattered by my formation's disbandment, crippled and no longer in service, or killed.
I believe that I can be of greater service to the Empire as an academic. With what I have seen of the world, there is an opportunity to educate our people about it. My Gift, for all the small utility it gave the Army by having a soldier who was impossible to permanently cripple and hard to kill, could provide a far greater utility to our countrymen. The very fact that I survived so many places and times where I could have died has given me the unique possibility of passing on my knowledge, rather than having it consumed by the grave.
I am thankful for all the education and experiences that the Imperial Army has given me, from my days as a Cadet at the Academy, to my last tour in the Colonies. The leadership of the Guards Corps has always been commendable and service in one of its Regiments has been an honor. I look forward to a future of serving the Empire in other ways.
Semper Paratus!
Courtenay Auster, Major
1st Imperial Dragoon Guards Regiment (Detached)
Court turned in his rolling chair, its leather creaking, towards his sister sitting on the bed, Raymonde's head in her lap. He handed the page to her. "So Sprout, what do you think? Anything I should change?" He smiled at her with a little mischievous gleam in his eye, "We can debate about which news will make Father lose his temper more: that you've run away to Glynn, or that I've quit my Army career."
