Who: Deputy Kinney & Allwyn Mercier
What: The Investigation Begins
Where: The Records Office
When: Saturday, July 2 (early; three o’ clock in the morning)
The brief interlude at the station had given Fred the opportunity to reset. When she re-approached the Records Office, the fire had been contained and the area had been cordoned off by a mixture of staff from the Marshal’s Office and a few helpful civilians. It didn’t appear that Allwyn had arrived yet, so she took the moment of quiet to slide her journal out from her coat and pen a few more quick messages - in a small period of time, it felt like she had spoken to nearly half the town about something. The next morning, based on the Rosier incident, she suspected she’d be meeting the other half in short order.
Once she’d penned her messages, the journal was replaced with her actual notebook, and she opened to the last page she’d been writing on regarding the Records Office. Her normally neat and compact script was messier, now, and the page was smudged with ink blots from writing without the necessarily care to keep things neat. She revisited her notes, walking a wide circle around the building, recording possible points of ingress and egress from the site in the narrow, dark alleyways to the wide, open street.
After sketching a rough map of the area, she drew back in closer after briefly catching up with the people keeping the area free of gawkers. The office itself was cool and dark, the hole in the wall jarring given how untouched much of the rest of the building was. It was like a gunshot wound, aimed with precision - fired at the same time that the manor had been targeted. She tapped the end of her pen against her lips. Which one was meant to be the distraction, though?
