Impressed with little Miss Marais for drumming up the nerve to ask a question, the inspector happily took his time to listen in on their exchange. The more he observed from Auster, the better he liked the fellow: from building up the young woman to his clarity on the heart of the matter of policing in Glynn, Auster was on the money. Bellamy did nothing more than put his hands in his pants pockets and stand with his chest out, shoulders slightly back, and chin raised. He didn't even need to let on with one of his sunny smiles just how proud he was for someone to recognize his work the same way he saw it. It was just plain as day, to him: here was a man with whom he was on the same page. He'd just never heard anyone -- anyone! -- talk like this before. It was a cool drink of water on a hot summer day to hear, at last, someone who didn't question whether he was wrong.
