This was a dance that Viola knew well, and there was something sharp and nostalgic about playing it with him again. As well as they knew each other and as fond as they were, Vi knew that Brig's loyalty began and ended with Beau, and she was unlikely to get anything out of him that he felt would've been a betrayal of his confidence, sister or no.
But his response was telling enough on its own -- hardly a refutation that he'd been doing poorly all alone in the manor on the hill. That would've been bad enough. But say that he wished he could've done more... that was almost more troubling. There was only so much that Brig could do as a servant, friend or not, but she was sure that he, of all people, would've spun any news as positively as he could.
"Does he have anyone here?" she asked, her translucence spreading from her lips to her cheeks. "Besides you, I mean. And blasted Tucker Belmont, who obviously doesn't count."
