She felt the soft fabric of his sleeve against her cheek and promptly pulled away, but not before she caught the roll of his eyes and petulantly narrowed her own. "I'm aware." His suggestion that she would be out galavanting in the city nearly caused her to laugh, but she masked it well behind an indignant sniff that would have made any Clove lady proud.
"You're absurd. I wasn't even thinking about it."
As much as her emphasis implied otherwise, this was not something she said to shame him but a confession of the truth. Despite a few experimental trysts, she had yet to actually sleep with anyone, not that that was any of his business, and though she knew it was common enough that engaged couples seek their pleasures elsewhere up until their marriage, it honestly hadn't been something she'd considered. She would be far too busy with her apprenticeship, anyway.
"But if you're not going to, then of course I won't either," she snapped quickly, offended that he had implied otherwise, and with that she quickened her pace so that she was slightly ahead of him lest he see the frustrating splash of color that deepened upon the apples of her cheeks. She did not even check to see if he'd follow.
She paused only briefly to toe her shoes off so that she could break from the path and start walking on the grass, diverging from the direction they'd been originally been heading to forge her own way.
