Beau took the momentary distraction for what it was worth, lifting his hand and manifesting a sudden rain of illusory feathers and flower petals. All at once the children stopped in their task, eyes wide at the visually striking phantasm. After a heartbeat of stillness, they were off chasing the petals, trying to catch them and shrieking with delight as they disappeared into smoke with the lightest touch. Beau straightened up, meeting Calvin's gaze across the short distance, smiling faintly.
