Leland shifted, looking over at Tegwaret. "No, no. Nothing like that. It just seems my past is catching up with me on all counts. Seeing you again was and is wonderful, but I can't say the same for everyone in my past." Leland frowned, knowing Tegwaret knew nothing about his history in Whisper Run, but he would have to tell him to explain. He couldn't just dismiss it when Tegwaret was so obviously concerned.
"Just the other day I chanced to run into an old...acquaintance from sometime back. A few years ago, I settled in Whisper Run because they needed a healer. I grew very close to and fond of a young woman there, but things didn't work out well. A beguiler came into town and he and his cadre left it in near ruins. The young woman in question...she, her brother, and I were all badly hurt. I saved the two of us, but I couldn't save him. To this day I blame myself for that because he was so close to death...I think my fear of necromancy kept me from pushing hard enough to save him. She likely thought the same and we grew apart. Part of the reason I came here to Sapphire was to leave my past behind me, but it's followed me here. She's here in the city and..."
Leland trailed off, the emotion raw in his voice. "I didn't expect it to be so hard to see her again." He furrowed his brow. "It wasn't like seeing you again, Teg. It's wonderful having you back in my life. But her...I'd close a door and it got reopened."
