Peter appreciated the hug, he did. He squeezed her tightly. But he couldn't pretend he was okay. His entire body was shaking.
May had always been so supportive of his Avengers life and the Spider-Man thing. She'd been nervous and a little annoyed he hadn't told her when she found him in the suit. There'd been ground rules, of course. School still came first and he needed to tell her when he was injured or if something went wrong. But she'd been the best mom a superhero could ask for.
And of course May wouldn't leave. She had stood by him through so much, she wasn't going to just take off when his life was in danger. And it had cost her hers.
"It's my fault," he whispered, pulling back slowly. "I got her killed, I put you and Ned and Happy in danger..." What the hell kind of 'hero' was he if the lives of the people he loved were on the line?
