If there was one person Benjamin could thank at that moment, it was definitely Ace. If he hadn’t gotten the invitation to the road trip, Ben would be at home at that moment, possibly being lazy and mostly sleeping his days away. But here he was, in Italy, on a beach, with his friends and the girl he liked. Summer couldn’t get any better. Girls being in their swimwear was the icing on the cake, and Lucy wearing a bikini was the cherry on top of it. As he swam towards her, he was beginning to wish that they didn’t have to go back to school later. Or normal life, either. He grinned as he dived underwater before she could see him coming up to her, and when he was near enough, he pulled on her leg to pull her underwater, letting go when he caught her off guard. Lucy laughed as Frankie splashed some water in her direction and quickly stuck out her tongue. “Missed!” Whatever she had imagined their road trip to be like, this wasn’t it. While she had gotten rather tired by the end of the car ride, all the stops they had made had allowed her to discover an even more beautiful location, and Italy was like a dream. The temperature was lovely and camping was proving to be a rather interesting adventure. The only thing she was worried about was running out of room before she had ran out of pictures she wanted to take. Letting herself drift on her back for a moment, she was utterly unaware Benjamin was swimming towards her, and when he pulled her under water she resurfaced with a loud splutter, looking around for the culprit. “You prat,” she laughed, making a lunge at him. “I’m going to get you for that!” He looked at her smugly, but that smug expression disappeared when he realised that she was lunging at him, and Benjamin quickly tried to swim away -- except that he wasn't really trying, since he was more amused than afraid of Lucy trying to possibly drown him. He lost his balance in the process, and ended up being underwater, and since he was close enough to her, he reached out to take one of her arms to pull her down as well. Unintentionally, he ended up laughing underwater, which made some of the water enter his mouth, and he pushed himself up to the surface, spluttering. She caught up with him quicker than she had expected and let out a loud “Ha!” when she managed to push her under water, screeching when she was pulled down as well. “That’s not fair!” she said as she broke the surface, giving him a mock glare. It would be correct to say the Lucy here in Italy was definitely a more carefree version of her Hogwarts self. For once, there weren’t Prefect duties to concern her with, or stories that might get back to her father if one of her cousins accidentally said a little too much in a letter home. No, for these two weeks she could just enjoy herself, and she would worry about what came after when they were all back home. “I need to put on some more sunblock,” Lucy said, critically eyeing her skin. She hadn’t lied when she had told Frankie she hated her freckles, although she hadn’t put into practice her suggestion of having Benjamin “help her love them”. While she found his admiration flattering, it also made her feel rather self-conscious. “I think I’m going to head out of the water for a bit before we actually drown each other.” It was said with a smile, and she had no doubt Benjamin would follow her anyway, but that was fine. Benjy didn’t really understand why she wanted to put on more sunblock, but he assumed that it was a ‘girl thing’, and wasn’t going to stop her. Predictably, when he heard that she was going to get out of the water, his eyes lightened up. “I’ll come with you,” he said, starting swimming towards the beach to follow her. “I can’t let you be all alone, remember? You’re my responsibility.” By now Lucy had heard that particular sentence often enough to stop her from even rolling her eyes. She had, admittedly, first thought Benjamin’s concern was an act to make her like him, but had since come to the conclusion no one would be able to keep it up this long. Which meant it was actually somewhat endearing, and although she wasn’t really in any danger it did made her feel just that bit more safe. “So I am,” she said when they were close enough to the shore to be able to walk the rest of the way. “Still weird to think, isn’t it, that we’re actually in Italy?” The furthest she’d ever been from home before as Ireland, and even then her parents had been there. “I think I want to travel for a living.” Benjamin was becoming more and more distracted from staring at Lucy’s face, because it was prettier than he had ever seen her at Hogwarts, and her hair seemed to sparkle under the sun. He would never go as far as to describe all of these to her, cheesy as he was, because it made him sound completely smitten (not that he wasn’t). He shrugged, breaking out of his little daydream when she started talking. “Not really,” he grinned. “I travel a lot during summer hols,” He didn’t say that as if he was bragging, but more as if it was a fact of life. His feet dug into the sand as he kept on walking. “Definitely something you’d want to do for the rest of your life. Europe’s fun but you should go somewhere further next time.” Lucy had to admit she was somewhat jealous of the easy way Benjamin seemed to get things from his parents. She hadn’t got the impression they were particularly close, however, and in that aspect perhaps she was the lucky one. Her father could be a bit of a pain sometimes, but she did know her parents were always there to support her. “What places have you been?” she asked as they reached the spot where she had left her bag. Wrapping her beach shrug around her hips to form a sort of skirt, she began rubbing sunblock on her arms. “Europe is pretty big.” “Half of Europe, I think,” he looked up at the sky for a moment before moving his gaze away because the sun was hurting his eyes a bit. “Japan, New Zealand, America,” Benjamin made a face as he continued, though there was a degree of affection in his voice, “I usually go with my dad, he says that it inspires him or something, I don’t know.” “Where would you go first if you could?” he genuinely wanted to know, thinking that maybe if he’d been there he could tell her about it. “Wow.” That was pretty impressive. Thinking about his question, Lucy poured a dollop on her nose, which probably made her look somewhat ridiculous, but she had burned her nose before and that was so not happening again. “France, maybe. Aunt Fleur tells us about it sometimes and Paris just sounds so pretty.” It didn’t help that most of her stories were filled with romanticisms about the buildings and clothes. “Plus, there’s just something about French names, don’t you think?” He almost made a face again at the mention of France, because he remembered trying to hit on some French girls two summers ago, and they had rejected him pretty harshly. That had ruined his would've been awesome France vacation. Ben chortled at her remark about French names, turning his head towards her so that he'd face her. "They're hard to pronounce, you mean?" Then he noticed that there was something on her nose. He'd assumed that it was her sunblock, but it looked like she had added more than she needed to. A part of him wanted to laugh, but he stifled that laugh by grinning instead, before moving closer, his hand reaching out to swipe off some of it. That was when he realised that he was standing very close to her, and that she really did have some freckles on her face which made her very pretty. Lucy rolled her eyes good-naturedly. “Noo, I meant that they sound pretty romantic. Like Adéline. Or Guillaume.” She drew out the names, somewhat exaggerating the French accent. That was probably the reason the blokes in those books Molly read always had a French name. She didn’t notice Benjamin stepping closer to her, and when his fingers brushed her nose she looked up, about to ask what he was doing, but somehow the words got stuck in her throat. What was going on? What was going on was that Benjamin was slowly realising that this was the moment he had been waiting for since he had announced (and realised) that he fancied Lucy. He could have done it while they were out in Hogsmeade, while they were studying, while they were at the beach, while they were playing, and during the road trip but something had always held him back (he didn't want her to smack him on the face, for one thing). So he did what any boy would do when they were this close to the girl they fancied. Before she could say anything else, made him laugh and forget what he wanted to do, Benjamin leaned forward to kiss her on the lips. If Lucy had been more experienced, she would have seen it coming from miles away, but as it was she was only vaguely aware something was different. Looking in Benjamin’s face, it hit her that his eyes were really quite nice, and before she had the time to think anything else, Benjamin had closed the distance between them and they were kissing. Lucy responded before she was really aware of what they were doing, and by the time she did she didn’t particularly want to stop. It was warm, and nice, and not at all as scary as she had expected it to be. Moving her lips slowly, she tried to match his movements. Benjamin could tell that Lucy wasn’t really experienced in kissing as he was, but he didn’t really dwell over it, since that wasn’t the point, and at least one of them knew what they were doing. He placed his hands on her shoulders, which still felt damp from swimming, and had every intention to keep on kissing her – until he felt water hitting the side of his face. His surprise made him break off the kiss to look at the offender, which was a couple of younger swimmers near them. Benjamin gave them a glare for ruining one of the best moments in his life. Then he turned to Lucy, grinning a bit. “Want to do that again?” Breaking away from the kiss, Lucy was surprised to realise her hands had somehow made their way to rest on Benjamin’s chest. She had forgotten for a moment that there were other people in the world besides the who of them, and when the children ran off she quickly sneaked a look in the direction of the water where the others were still having fun. Would they have seen? “Maybe,” she said, looking back at Benjamin, a soft blush on her face. His grin grew wide and Benjamin, being a teenage boy, took the ‘maybe’ as a ‘yes’, and, ignoring that there were still people around them, he moved in for another kiss, this time it was less spontaneous and clumsy as before. Lucy hadn’t expected him to immediately try again, and she stopped him with a hand on his chest and something that was definitely not a giggle because Lucy Weasley did not giggle. “Not here,” she chastised him. “People are watching.” If Frankie got hold of this she would never let her live it down. The point of the trip was getting to do things without having to keep it a secret, but Benjamin decided to relent if that meant he could kiss her again. He took her hand and gave her an expectant look. “Then let’s go somewhere else.” “We can take a walk,” she suggested, letting herself be lead away. Benjamin’s main reason for going on this trip might have been to be with her, but she was still coming to terms with the fact he wasn’t just a friend to her, and letting him kiss her made her feel vulnerable, if also strangely giddy. What would my father say, briefly flashed through her mind, but she shoved the thought away. She was here to experience new things, and this definitely counted, didn’t it? |
