He had been in his pajamas during the exchange and had not bothered to change when he had invited her over. Honestly, though he told her otherwise, he was fairly upset. He could not understand her words and her insistence that he did not respect her. How could she think that?! He loved her! He loved her and respected her for her intelligence, her kindness, her stubbornness. He found her to be an equal partner in his once great senate of the dead; he had been devoted to her and her alone though it was not expected or even required of him to do so. She was a woman of her own and he was insulted to the argument otherwise. Yet, like he had said, he would never--could never--turn her away. Half his life had been watching her leave him for so many months he would never actively chose to be out of her company. So as there was a knock on his door, he was glad to be opening it, encircling her in an embrace as his face gently rested in her hair. |
