Jeremiah had felt like everyone needed something from him from the moment he walked into the city. He had emails and voicemails from his father, two packages and a whole inbox full of things he needed to sign off on. He had shut the office door and picked up the bottle of wine. He had finished off half of it, cleared his voice mail and then laid across his bed to watch television.
It had lasted an hour before the silence started to annoy him. He had several options for company. He could call anyone but in the end he messaged Alice. It was easy. In the long week they had spent together in the car, he had gotten used to having her around.
He took a cab to Brooklyn and found her apartment easily. He knocked on the door, looking down at himself. He hadn't bothered to change and still had on the UCLA sweatpants and tee shirt he had thrown on after his shower. When she answered the door, he grinned and held up a box of M&Ms and a box of Skittles. "I brought the candy." He was clearly an idiot for getting so close and missing her so easily.
