The explanation he offered seemed to make perfect sense to her. Later she would likely reexamine the moment and wonder what she was thinking- or not thinking- to accept the answer but that didn't occur in the moment. Emotions. Passions. Yes, was all she could think. Of course.
Time seemed to stop below the waves and it was another of those things topping her list of new experiences. She held on to him, her hands moving along his torso and back. The kiss was as timeless and yet insistent as the water that surrounded them and Demeter- no, Alice- felt transported for a moment. Eventually the urge to breath came crashing in around her though, breaking the spell. She broke the kiss and rose to the surface, nearly panting as she stood in the waves. Night had officially fallen now but the water was still beautiful.
"I need to catch-" she shook her head slightly, still feeling disoriented. "I think I had more to drink than I realized. Let me lie down a moment," she told him as she regretfully began walking back toward the shore. She was smiling, she felt relaxed but full of exhilliration that was intoxicating.
Demeter hardly left the water. She moved just enough to feel the sand below her hand, just enough so that when she lay down the surf didn't wash into her lungs but over her legs and torso. The ground beneath her steadied and strengthened her. Her head was still cloudy but that she didn't mind. She felt grounded and that was the important part.
Alice wanted to lift her head to see if Jeremiah was following her but the connection with the earth was too important in the moment. Her mind started trying to work things out, make sense of the water and the emotions- the time that she seemed to have lost track of- but she refused. She wanted to enjoy the way she was feeling, drink in it. Nothing would ruin this for her, it had been too long.
