You have ten missed calls.
Like a homeless child she pressed a hand to the glass of the diner she passed, pausing to stare inside at the brightly lit tables and the people that occupied them. Couples. Families. Sometimes one or two people would sit alone but it never seemed to be for long. Even if they were alone, a waitress would come chat with them idly on their down time. One with glasses and a dark braid of black hair tended to do this often. When that same waitress turned to look out the window Zinny stepped backward and shoved her hand in her pocket.
The hoodie she wore was too big. The skinny jeans too, even they looked like they were getting a bit baggy around the thighs. Her cheeks were hollow and there were dark, dark circles under her eyes. As she walked away she could hear the sounds of laughter and it reminded her of sitting in a great hall with all the mightiest warriors gathered to celebrate their victories.
Zinny hated these stupid memories, as if they could even be called as much. Admitting they were memories only served to solidify the idea that they had happened. They had happened to her but how did that make any sense? She looked at her phone and paused just past the diner to tap out a message to her father.
I'm fine. On my way home. Phone was on silent, sorry.
