Who: Parents and students
Where: The new arts space (located between St Jude’s and Constance Billard)
When: Saturday evening, the weekend before classes start
What: A fundraiser
Although ostensibly an event to raise funds for the new performing arts space, the current state of the room revealed that most of the work had already been completed over the summer. The benefit of having parents with deep pockets was on fully display. The dark mahogany floors were expertly polished and an elaborate dedication plaque near the main door bore the name of several of the parents and grandparents of the students currently milling about the room. Many of the surnames expertly engraved were familiar ones, at least to readers of the New York Times business section and the like.
A long table bearing every imaginable appetizer and light plate stretched the length of the wall and a small string quartet took up the rest of the space. A few tasteful exhibits of student productions and projects were discretely placed throughout, but it was clear that this event was less about the arts and more about mingling and the open bar in the far corner. Despite the speech that had been going on for the past five minutes, most eyes were directed around the room at new arrivals or at the food rather than the speaker.
"We depend on the support of our students' families, and once again, you've risen to the challenge." Headmistress Queller concluded with a polite smile, knowing that she was already losing the attention of the room. "Thank you all for coming and for your continuing dedication to our students and our two schools." With that she took a sip of champagne and relinquished control of the room. The din immediately resumed, a mixture of polite chattering and the tinkering of expensive flatware on Limoges plates. Parents and students continued to drift in through the open doors as the quartet began to leisurely play a lilting Mozart air. It seemed that the business portion of the evening had been concluded.
