Anye paused and looked up at Nick, a look of confusion on her face. She didn't try to hide that, and it took a couple of seconds for things to really click in her head. "You're so stupid," she sighed, smiling faintly. The expression was more genuine now, and just bordering somewhere between pitying and exasperated. "You don't make me uncomfortable." She wasn't sure if she was physically capable of telling Nick what all went through her head when her appearance was complimented, it was just too embarrassing. Plus, she got the feeling it would kind of irritate him in that protective way of his. "I want to go home and watch bad movies. That was the plan."
"And it's your birthday. What do you want? I can't tell you what you want." She paused. "I don't think I'd even know where to guess." Which would never stop being weird. Anye had always worn her ambitions like armor, coated herself in layers of dreams and fantasy to keep her safe from reality. In most cases, she was always very vocal about what she wanted. In this and in nearly all things, Nick proved to be the exception.
