Famed detective Basil of Baker Street, who had been led to this remote kingdom by rumor and suspicions of royal coups and trouble, had officially found both. He stood firmly with his back to the wall of the cu-de-sac he had been forced into staring down his arch enemy, the infamous Napoleon of crime Professor Ratigan. Both were breathing hard, the direct result of the frantic chase throughout the palace that had ended with Basil held at bay in the small dead end hallway. The two mice faced each other down, neither willing to back down. Ratigan advanced further into the hallway menacingly. A cheer arose from outside, and Ratigan winced. Basil grinned wickedly.
“It looks like I’ve won again,” he said confidently.
“Not quite yet,” Ratigan replied softly. He came even closer, and Basil tensed. Although it was true that the coup was over, the fact did remain that there was no one else in this section of the palace but the two of them. This close, it was clear how easily matched Basil and Ratigan were. Although both were nearly a full inch taller than other mice, the difference in their heights was negligible. In strength, in fighting, and in brainpower, they were nearly a match, making the outcome of a physical struggle impossible to determine. At quarters these close, the only thing either could hope for to tip the balance in their favor was to stall until help could come.
“I’m not giving up yet,” Ratigan said softly, but with confidence. “You may have won this time, but you can’t stop me forever. Your jails can’t hold me. Sooner or later, I will have everything I desire.”
“I rather doubt that – no matter what you do, I will find you and I will always stop you.” Ratigan growled softly, but Basil continued anyway.
“You will always fail, so long as you stay on the wrong side of the law.”
“You’re wrong!” Ratigan snarled, moving swiftly and pinning Basil against the wall. They glared at each other eye-to-eye, pressed together full length. “I will have everything, and it will all come to me willingly!” Basil was silent, trying desperately to think of a way out of Ratigan’s hold. Ratigan’s eyes were wild, and Basil went still hoping the other would regain his senses. Suddenly with a snarl, Ratigan surged forward and pressed his mouth to Basil’s in a fierce kiss. Basil’s eyes went wide and he struggled to break free of the other’s iron grip.
One moment, Basil was being held helpless against the wall and the next he collapsed to the floor gasping as Ratigan darted back to the end of the cul-de-sac with the lightning speed that had caught Basil unprepared minutes earlier. He stared at his enemy from the floor, shocked to the core. Ratigan spun to flee, but paused.
“You know I never give up, detective,” he spoke flatly before looking over his shoulder at Basil still sprawled on the floor. “No matter what I have to do.” Criminal and detective locked eyes again, one determined and the other disturbed. Pounding footsteps and shouts from the hall proclaimed their discovery, and Ratigan was gone in a swirl of cloak. Basil remained seated, numb with shock, still trying to process what had just happened.
