It was just another town.
Bruce kept his cap pulled down, shifting his backpack as he walked along the sidewalk. Trying to look inconspicuous. Blend in. He hadn't been able to hitchhike for too far, so he had walked into this town somewhere in the middle of nowhere. Hopefully he could find an out of the way job and start again. It had been a month since the Hulk had shown up again and he left behind the life he had managed to establish in Canada, working his way down into the midwest. Granted, living in a cabin in the woods wasn't much of a life, but it was quiet there. Nobody had bothered him for quite some time.
But General Ross never gave up the chase. Soon he was knocking down Bruce's door again with a squadron of soldiers and their toys. Bruce flinched at a memory that wasn't his, guns blazing at him from all directions, and he stopped to grip a nearby lamppost to catch his breath.
Breathe...calm down... It was just a memory. Nothing to panic over, he kept telling himself, turning his wrist to check the heart monitor display on his watch. 134, only a slight raise. He was safe. So was the town.
"Hey you!" A voice caught his attention and he looked over at a local policeman leaning against his black and white car. Was he caught? Bruce steeled himself and answered, "Me?" Hoping he looked innocent.
The cop waved him on, "No loitering. Try the diner if you want to stop somewhere." Bruce breathed an inward sigh of relief and nodded, hurrying to move away. Police made him uneasy too, they had no problem with shooting at the Hulk too. And it only took one of them to recognize him before Ross tracked him down again.
Down the street and around the corner, he thought he had avoided a potentially bad situation. But as four pairs of hands grabbed him from a dark alley, he realized he had just gone from the frying pan into the fire. He was backed up against a wall by four gang members sporting knives and guns, waving them in his face. Bruce kept his tone low and pleading, trying not to think of his raising heart rate as the guys frisked him for money, stripping him of his backpack. "Hey, no please..." he tried to say, but one of them aimed a punch for his stomach and he doubled over. "You...don't understand..." he coughed out. But the thugs had already started what they thought they were going to finish on this out-of-towner, beating him with their fists and throwing him through a line of trash cans with a crashing sound.
Banner's watch was beeping like it would never stop, 189...194...205. His eyes flew open in a panic, eerily green as he looked up at his attackers. This town didn't know what was about to hit it.
