Natasha had seen some fucked up things in her time, but King was a piece of work! She knew now just how far he was willing to go to get his perfect world full of peace and freedom, delivered by way of his HAMMER, and it had involved him destroying so much of what she valued in the process. She hadn't dared check in with her friends, partly because she couldn't afford the time to grieve when Natasha found that the were dead and partly because she wasn't sure who would fall in line under King. There was no end to how much this assignment sucked and Natasha was going to make sure Coulson knew it when she was done being fucking Yelena! Even if it meant dancing on the old goat's grave. She paced her quarters, trying to put her thoughts in order. She couldn't leave, Natasha knew that, whatever the situation on the outside, she was far more use to The Avengers...or what was left of them...inside King's operation. At least then she could head off his worst manoeuvres. Or try to. Meanwhile, there was one thing she might be able to accomplish that might even the score, at least a little. It made her sick to watch King parade James in front of his agents like a pet poodle and it was long past time he should be out of this hell-hole. Something he'd told her the night of Fury's death kept resonating in her mind. King had given him back a memory, of Steve. This meant, somewhere amongst the files and data her current boss kept, there might be more. If she could give James back anything it would leave him better off than he was now and so with a nod to her reflection in the mirror, Natasha snuck out of her room and down to King's control room. Technically, she had every right to be there, after all Yelena was Director of HAMMER now, but if King caught her digging around in the Winter Soldier files she'd have some serious explaining to do. Better that she not get caught at all, that way she wouldn't have to stroke King's ego - or worse - in order to put him at his ease. Seeing James in the pod, so silent and still, was a kick in Natasha's guts every time she saw him, but she needed him awake for this to work. She'd watched King carefully when he released his 'asset' and, with a few false starts, finally saw a blink from James. "You're awake," she couldn't help but beam a smile, even though she could see he was disorientated at her presence. "I told you I'd get you out of here," she said with a flash of mischief, "and tonight's your lucky night. King's taken far too much from both of us, it's time we took something back," Natasha said firmly. "First, I need you to tell me again, what he did the night you had the flashback," because, luck willing, she was going to give him far more than a single memory tonight. She was going to give him his life back. |
