Silence -- that was all there was. Silence and the endless stars. In the past, in moments of doubt as prince of Daxam, the stars had been a comfort. They weren’t any longer. They surrounded him, reminding him that he wasn’t on Earth any longer - of why he was there, in that pod. The weight of the necklace in his hand, as light as it was, comforted him in a way that nothing else could. He held it firmly, a smile pulling gently at the corner of his mouth, as he promised himself - and her, though she was unable to hear - that he would return to her somehow.... regardless of how long it took. He started to put coordinates into the pod’s fight systems, but a bright light interrupted him - a large wormhole forming rapidly, swirling in front of him in the emptiness of space. The pod began to shake, the wormhole pulled him in - where to, he had no idea - and the brightness blinded him, to the point that he had to close his eyes. He felt afraid, as the turbulence of the wormhole shook the pod violently, but he would be brave. For her. Consciousness returned suddenly. He sat up quickly, his blue eyes opening in anticipation of... something, he wasn’t sure what, but was confused by what he saw. The Kryptonian pod was gone; he was in a large room, on an equally large bed. Climbing off the bed, he looked around for any clues to indicate where he was. It didn’t take long. He saw the technology in the room, threw the curtains open and saw the city. It wasn’t National City, but he still knew. He was back on Earth. A degree of panic gripped his lungs. He had left here for a reason; Kara had convinced him to leave here for a reason, though neither had wanted him to. Reacting instinctively, he slammed his hands - balled into fists - against the wall length windows, expecting the glass to break and to give him freedom from this room. Not that he'd get far, but he couldn’t just stand there. Even in here, safe from the atmosphere for now, he didn’t know how long he had left. Nothing happened, though. He turned and ran for the door, throwing it open with much more strength than he intended. The reverberating impact that followed didn’t stop him from heading for the stairs, caring little for a door when his damn life was at stake. His footsteps pounded in his ears, matching the pace of his heart, as he climbed the stairs all the way up to the roof. He shoved the emergency door off its hinges, falling to his knees briefly as he inhaled deeply - not out of an eagerness to die, but a need to catch his breath; even he got tired after a while. Again, nothing happened. He stood up, staring up at the sky. For a moment, he wondered if the poison hadn’t yet reached this far, but that thought left his mind when he saw the translucent and shimmering shield that stretched above him. Moving quickly to the edge of the roof, he saw how far the shield stretched, covering a large portion of this city. How long had it been since he’d left Earth? Had other cities found a way to combat the airborne poison? Or was this to keep it concentrated once it arrived? A fail-safe measure. The sinking feeling that hit him was much greater than he anticipated and he stumbled backward from the edge, dropping to his knees - on purpose this time. Had he escaped Earth in the nick of time, only to be brought back here by a wormhole? Was it really his destiny to die? He exhaled, a laugh escaping despite his situation. He knew Kara was likely in National City, safe with her family and friends. He had no way to contact her; no way to get to her. There was nothing he could do, other than remain there and wait for his inevitable death. He couldn’t out-run the airborne poison. His mind filled with memories of Kara, Mon-El closed his eyes and accepted his fate. Though it was not National City, it was still where Kara currently resided and she did her best to keep it safe. It helped here that everyone knew Kara Danvers and Supergirl were the same person. She had been worried about that at first, but quickly learned that none of these people were from her Earth. Except Alex of course, who already knew. She hadn’t talked to her sister in a little bit though, and thinking about it now made her feel guilty. But after being a kid for awhile, she thought that Alex deserved a bit of a break from her sister. And Cisco had been here too but that didn’t last long. She made a mental note to see what Alex was up to after she got back to the hotel. But for now, Supergirl had work to do. There was a lot of crime in Vegas, and she could do a lot of good there. She had done a lot of good there, thus far. She had sort of gotten into a routine of it. Her routine had been interrupted by the weird two week period she spent as a child. She had a lot to make up for. Thinking about the time she spent as a kid made Kara a little sad, because when she’d actually been seven, she was still on Krypton with her parents. She missed them. And being a kid for awhile just brought that out more. But she brushed those thoughts aside, continuing on her way. She knew something was different as she flew back towards the Mandalay after a saving session. She didn’t know how she knew, she just did. And her suspicions were confirmed as she landed on the roof and saw him. “Mon-El?” Was this some kind of trick? She got a bit closer, freaking out because he couldn’t be on Earth without dying. He certainly looked like he was ready to die right now. This was not Earth 38 but she still couldn’t help worrying. She stood but a few feet from him now, her red boots visible on the ground of the roof, depending where he looked. She was in full costume and utter disbelief. Of course, Kara knew it might not be Mon-El, just someone who looked a lot like him. But somehow she thought it was him, maybe she just wanted it to be? Was that selfish? Now he was as trapped as she was. And he might even die just being here. “Is it really you?” Of all the things Mon-El expected, hearing Kara’s voice was not one of them. Was it just a figment of his imagination? Or would she be standing in front of him? It didn’t matter. He would do anything to see her one last time, to be with her in his final moments. His eyes opened quickly and her figure formed in front of him. The red boots, the cape, her hair wind-swept and beautiful - his face lit up with a smile, exhaling a laugh of disbelief. The fact he was going to die soon didn’t matter. She was here. “Kara,” he exhaled, standing up and closing the distance to her as quickly as he could. His arms wrapped around her tightly, holding her as close as he could. “It’s me. I promise, it’s me.” He moved back just enough to see her face, but he didn’t let go of her. There wasn’t a thing in the whole world that could make him do that right now. “I got caught by a wormhole - it brought me back here, I don’t know how,” he explained, trying to save his breaths. He couldn’t feel the lead in the air yet, but he was sure that it wasn’t far away - it had been days since he had left, so he was surprised that he wasn’t dead already. “I’m sorry, I tried. I really did.” Kara shook her head, not letting go of him either. She almost felt like if she did, he’d disappear right before her eyes. And she wasn’t sure that was something she could handle. Losing him a second time. As it was, he consumed most of her thoughts. She wondered how he was, if he had made it through alright. He couldn’t be on Earth but that didn’t mean he was ever far from Kara’s mind. She was shaking a bit because this felt like a dream. Yet he was still there in front of her. “It didn’t. I mean...this isn’t our Earth. You should be safe.” Should be. But it wasn’t a guarantee. She hoped she was right. She hoped he’d be okay here. She could not watch him die while she stood there and did nothing because they were all trapped here. “We’re brought here...by outside forces, I’ve been here for a while.” She explained. It was so good to see him. She wasn’t sure that she ever would again. “How do you feel? Are you breathing okay?” She thought he’d be safe here, but she needed to be sure. Still, she was reluctant to let go of him. Mon-El was really here. Now she just had to hope he could survive and that this place didn’t take him away from her again. He could feel the trembling in her limbs, even while she held onto him as firmly as he was doing with her, and it made him realise that he was shaking a little also - from the expectation of dying, but also the sheer relief at being able to see Kara again. He hated that he’d been brought back to Earth to die, after all she'd done to save him, but he didn’t hate being able to see her again. “What do you mean, this isn’t our Earth? Which one is it?” he asked, a spark of hope igniting in his rapidly beating heart when the word ‘safe’ fell from her lips. Was there actually a chance that he wouldn’t die? He remembered visiting the Earth of Kara’s friend, Barry Allen, so he knew that it was possible for there to be other versions. Yet the possibility that an alternate Earth could be his salvation hadn’t even crossed his mind. Her question had Mon-El turn his attention to his breathing, taking slow and deep breaths, as he tried to detect even a hint of lead in the air - but there was nothing. And there should have been by now. If this had been their Earth, he should have been near death already and he wasn’t. That realisation had another smile lighting up his face, looking at Kara with relief saturating his entire expression. He wasn’t going to die. He moved his hands from her lower back up to her face, holding it gently and letting his fingers tangle in her hair. “I’m alright,” he said, multiple emotions lacing his voice all at once and his eyes burning with unshed tears. He closed the distance between their lips, kissing her passionately and pouring everything he felt in that moment into their kiss. Time continuing didn’t matter to Mon-El while he kissed Kara, but even they had to come up for air eventually. Slowly and very unwillingly, he ended the kiss but didn’t let go of her. “Damn, it feels good to kiss you again,” he admitted, a laugh escaping his lips. His heart was hammering in his chest but it wasn’t because he was going to die. It was for a much better reason. “I know it’s only been days but I missed it - I missed you, Kara Zor-El.” It was then that he remembered what she’d given him before he had left and he let go of her with one hand, digging into the pocket of his black jacket and bringing it out to show her. “It’s time for me to return this to you,” he said, taking hold of her hand and placing the necklace within her palm gently. “It kept me safe. It brought me back to you.” “Well, I don’t actually know the number of this one.” Kara said. “Barry might.” He was here now too. Having come in during the time Kara spent as a child, she was willing to bet he was more than a little confused about that. She was more than a little confused about it herself. But it was just this place. “But it’s not our Earth.” She confirmed for him. The fact that they were trapped in some kind of barrier and what could wait. She was going to tell him, but she didn’t need to explain all of it right now. “You’re okay here, it won’t hurt you.” She said. Well, there were a number of things about this place that were pretty odd but the important thing was that Mon-El wasn’t going to die. And they were together again. She could hardly believe it. And it felt like a dream. How many times had she dreamed of this very moment only to wake up and be even more heartbroken than she had been before? But no, this was real. He was here. She could feel it in the way he kissed her. Dreams did alright, but they were never as good as the real thing. And one could tell this. Or at least Kara could. “I missed you too.” She told him when the kiss finally broke, which she happily returned. Though it had only been days for Mon-El, for Kara it had been a good deal longer than that. She’d come to this place in April, and it was now August. Thinking about it now, she could hardly believe it had been so long. But Alex was here, Barry too, and now Mon-El. And she was doing good here. She wasn’t giving up on getting them home either, but not until they could find a way to do it so Mon-El could come too and not instantly die when they got back. They’d figure something out, they had to. She wasn’t willing to lose him again. She smiled when he placed the necklace in her hands, tears starting to form behind blue eyes. “It did,” she agreed. “It brought you back to me.” And in these moments, nothing else in the whole world mattered but the two of them. |
