She hadn't changed in appearance from what memories he had once more of her, other than the lack of a army uniform, and she looked good. He looked an entire world away from how he had in the war, though. The clean shaven, boyish look was long gone - replaced with worn clothes and gloves, stubble on his face and messy hair hidden mostly under a dark baseball cap. The slight smile at the corner of his mouth didn't disappear when she used the nickname that had become his name, more than his own first name. He didn't miss the way she looked around the place, doing the exact same thing he had done minutes ago. It was a habit that they apparently shared. He shifted back into his side of the booth, closing the menu that sat in front of him. In his half-studying of it, he knew what he'd have if it came to that. He wasn't sure if it would, depending on what she wanted to ask him, but it was part of the reason he'd chosen a public place. He wasn't surprised to hear that she had spoken with Steve, but he imagined that him being a kid was a strange experience. It was for him, and he'd known Steve their whole lives. "This place does weird shit," he remarked, partly as a response and partly as an overarching and very simplified explanation to their situation. "Was it a good conversation? Or is that partly why you want to talk to me?" He didn't think their conversation would just be about Steve. |
