Her choice of words was ironic. While it was true in the case of Stark, it had not been that long ago that he'd been hiding from a lot more. The intelligence organisations of the world wanted the Soldier, to have him pay for his crimes or to take control of and use him. HYDRA, SHIELD, the UN - to name just a few. All wanted him for different reasons, none that he would indulge. He just wanted to be left alone. "Used to be. That means you stopped," he noted. He studied her in silence for a moment. Her tone of voice was sincere and he didn't detect deception on her face, but he wasn't going to just assume that she wasn't trying to make him slip up. "That's a first," he commented. "Seems like all people care about is those stories of good old American heroes, of the ones who died serving their country." He shifted, stepping closer to her but having enough room between them so their conversation didn't look suspicious. "And you'd just do that for me? No questions asked?" he asked, what minimal expression there was on his face indicating that he didn't believe her. It didn't matter to him what she was before SHIELD, he knew that becoming a part of that organisation - any, in fact - could change you. For better or worse. |
