Her explanation for having walked this far didn't get a reaction from him, his facial expression still neutral, but he didn't believe her. He walked the streets all night for a collection of reasons, one of which had to do with the intense heat in this place, but she didn't look as if she had been walking all night. "It's 18 blocks," he responded, observing her from underneath his dark cap with a degree of wariness. It didn't show in his face or eyes, but it was still there. And the concern in her voice was surprising. It wasn't like he knew her that well. Most people in that hotel didn't know him at all, let alone well enough to know or care that he had disappeared. She seemed to care, and she wasn't faking that -- not unless she was an expert at faking emotions, and she didn't strike him as that type of person. But he wouldn't bet his survival on it. "Why?" he asked. "What does it matter to you?" |
