He could hear it in her voice, even though her words implied nothing more than the simplest of small talk. He knew they were more, though, even if he still had to determine all of the variables presented in his partially complete memories. He remembered times when he'd worked with her, and other times where he had worked against her; he knew that she had been a Soviet spy, a SHIELD agent and an Avenger. Now she was more like him. Now, neither of them worked for anyone. Her admission to following him didn't surprise him, nor did it give him cause to react in a particular way. He was curious to learn why she wanted to talk to him, if it was something simple and harmless or if it was something much more complicated. He almost laughed at that thought. Their entire lives were complicated. There had been nothing simple about his life the moment he had gone off to war. "What about?" he asked, shifting his feet and turning to face her. The cap that cast shadows over his face obscured a lot, but he knew she would still see the guarded flicker in his eyes. Trust was difficult, unless you were Steve. |
