She should have expected his answer to be as evasive as her own was regardless of what she might have hoped for. Much like love, hope was another thing that should belong solely to children and she was foolish for indulging in it. There was no reason for her to doubt his words and yet she wanted to say something to call him on the lack of logic, while at the same time being aware that she wold just be splitting hairs and that it wasn't worth the hassle.
This was frustrating on a variety of levels.
"Your reasoning doesn't make any sense. There were others who could have explained the situation, and did," she pointed out, taking care to keep her voice level and toneless. She wasn't here to pick a fight, she was here to get answers. It had been hard enough dealing with Steve before when he would speak of his good friend Bucky and she would think of the man she knew as James. He had been an important part of her life for long enough that seeing what he became hurt what was left of the useless organ known as her heart.
"I suppose I should thank you, then." She wasn't going to, not when he made comments to the fact of being aware they were once on the same side but no longer were. That only brought up more questions in her mind, ones that she was disinclined to ask. "There are many people who know who I am, not all of them know all the sides I once fought for." That he did and would admit it was another warning flag as far as what Steve might already know.
Taking a step back, she forced the knot in her chest to loosen up as she gave him a polite nod. "Thank you, then, for answering my question. I suppose this means I have no reason to be concerned that your reaching out to me might be indicative of something more than doing me a favor." With that, she turned as if to leave, feeling there was nothing more to be gained from continuing a conversation with him at this point.
