Rupert hoped that Fred and Wesley wouldn't be upset with him for getting everything that he had bought for Regan. But he had come to see the little girl as much as his own in the last couple of years, and he liked buying things for her. He wanted to spoil her, just like he wanted to spoil Fred and Wesley. Since he couldn't do it on a daily basis, though, the way he would have liked, he had to do it when he had the chance.
Like now.
He knew Wesley and Fred had a lot to talk about after what had happened in the lab that morning, so he decided that it was best to give them as much time as possible. Plus, it gave him a chance to spend more time with Regan. After getting their lunch, he walked over to the park with her where he put everything out on the table. While Regan started in on her chicken strips, he started on his chicken wrap. However, he found himself coughing in response to her question and had to put it down, looking at her in amazement.
"Well, Regan, that's..."
He paused for a moment, not sure what to tell her. He knew that if he could, he'd happily be a father to Regan, just as he'd happily be husband to Wesley and Fred. But it was something they'd never spoken about, and he knew that was because they were trying to maintain their own lives. With him in England and them here in Los Angeles, it was rather impossible to be anything more than a long-distance lover and friend, and that was something he had accepted a long time ago because he felt it better to be that than to not have them in his life at all.
But as much as he wanted to, he couldn't tell her that. He knew Wesley and Fred had to be part of the decision as to whether they told her and how.
"I like your mommy and daddy quite a lot too," he finally said. "But it's not quite the same here as it is where you were raised. However..."
He leaned closer and reached over to cover her hand. "You and your mommy and your daddy are the most important people in my life. You're my family, and no matter what happens, you always will be."
