Fred continued to hold onto Wesley as tightly as she could. She felt awful when he apologized because it wasn't his fault. Pulling back, she looked up at him and shook her head. "It's not you, Wesley. It's this place," she said. With a soft sigh, she stepped back and sat down on the edge of the long conference table. "What are we doing here?"
It was a loaded question, one they'd discussed a few times before coming to the firm, yet it still bothered her. "Why are we working for the place that took our daughter from us?" she asked as her eyes started to brim with tears. "I know we're watching her but anything could happen again and I don't want to lose her, Wesley. This time we might not get her back and that scares me."
Fred wanted to kick herself for not bringing this up before. They had been so quick to come to the firm in order to help Angel give Connor the life he deserved. Now Fred was starting to see all the cons in coming there and at the moment she was feeling a bit selfish. "We came here to give Connor a better life but what about our child? She was taken too. On the exact night as Connor. I know the circumstances were different, and thankfully Regan ended up in a better place, but from the moment Lilah offered us the firm, it's been all about Connor," she said.
Burying her face in her hands, Fred let out a soft sob. "I'm scared that I'm going to turn around and she'll be gone again. We can't lose her again," she said in a muffled voice.
