Not that long ago, Wesley would never have thought that he and Fred would have their own house in a Los Angeles suburb. It wasn't the kind of life they were leading, not with the demons and vampires they helped to hunt and the apocalypses they helped to divert. And of course, the disappearance of their daughter not that long after she was born had served to underscore that. As had her coming back, seven years older, practically grown up with powers neither of them would ever be able to completely understand. Suburban life wasn't for them, he would have told anyone who asked, as much as they might have hoped for or wanted it.
Of course, he would have also told anyone that they'd never go to work for Wolfram and Hart.
And yet now, there they were. They had their house in the suburbs with plenty of room for Regan to grow and a feeling of normalcy. And they were getting ready to start their jobs at the firm they had spent the last four years fighting. But they had done it for Connor, and they had done it to try to turn things around again after everything that had happened the last year.
He and Fred hadn't said much to each other about it, though. They both knew their worries, and they both knew their uncertainties. Talking more about it would just add to them. So after a restless night of sleep, Wesley got dressed and got breakfast ready while Fred helped Regan get ready. Then they headed for the office. In the car park, Wesley sat there for a moment, staring out through the windscreen before looking over at his wife. He hoped this was the right thing. For all of them, not just Connor.
Regan took his hand as they walked inside. Wesley squeezed it gently to let her know everything would be fine. He believed that. So long as he and Fred were there, it would be. And he knew Lorne and Angel and Gunn would all watch out too. So long as all of them stuck together, it would be.
Of course, there was someone he'd rather didn't stick with them. And he was waiting there when the lift doors open.
When Fred said she had to go, Wesley nodded before returning her kiss. "I love you too," he said before shooting a look over at Knox. Stupid wanker had been hanging over Fred since the day of their tour.
He watched as Fred and Knox headed up the stairs, waving to her when she turned around. God, he hoped they had made the right decision.
"Come on, sweetheart," he said, looking around. "My office is here somewhere. I think."
"Hey, English! Baby English!" Gunn called out, hurrying over to them with a basketball in his hand. "Check it out! Rooms with a view. And we get to pick!"
"We do?" Wesley asked.
"Well, except for the one over there." He pointed across the lobby. "That's for Mr. CEO. Hey, why don't you take the one next to me. Unless you want mine. But mine's got a view of the mountains, and I kind of what to keep that."
Wesley looked down at Regan. "What do you think?" he asked as they looked at the office Gunn led them to.
"You can see the whole city!" she said, letting go of his hand and running over to the window.
"I think that's a yes."
"You having second thoughts?" Gunn asked as he tossed his basketball back and forth in his hand.
"You're not?"
"Man, do I look like I belong here? You got the mystical creds at least. Even Baby English has more knowledge than I do. I just hit stuff. I mean, even if this works, and we can turn this place around, use it to do some good, it's gonna be a long, long while before any of us gets anywhere near comfortable here."
Wesley looked over at the desk where Regan was still looking out of the window. "I daresay you're right."
