Though Rosemary couldn’t get drunk herself, she was more than happy to be a continuous supply of alcoholic beverages for Alice. Usually Rosemary liked something in return for supplying alcohol but all her friends had been so busy with work or study or whatever other boring thing was occupying their time lately that turning water into -- well, it was more similar to vodka than wine -- in exchange for the amusement of drunk company seemed like a good deal. “Isn’t this so much better than studying?” "Of course it is!" Alice giggled, until a hiccup interrupted her. She held a hand over her chest until she could regain what remained of her composure. She was a lightweight -- being petite, inexperienced, and Asian could do that -- and she might have been more embarrassed about being the only drunk person in the room, if she didn't know that Rosemary was used to it (this was like powers training for her!). "Thank you sooooo much," she added. "I've been so stressed out lately, I think what I really needed was to --" Mockingly, her voice dropped a register. "Get my drank on. It's just like real college!" Rosemary laughed. Occasionally she wished she too could get drunk, but most of the time watching other drunk people was amusing enough that she didn’t feel like she was missing out. “There’s a lot more getting your drank on in college, a lot less studying,” she replied, speaking from her short experience of it. She would’ve made a killing with her powers if she hadn’t had to come here instead. "Yeah, I bet underage drinking would be a lot easier without Agents breathing down our necks all the time here." Alice couldn't help but to glance towards the door. She remembered the conversation she'd had with Agent Tesarik the other day and the possibility that agents like him could see in private areas. Surely, the DMS wouldn't show their hand by coming to bust her for drinking now. "And there's, like, fraternities and other places you can go. We just have club night at Capers." “Right,” Rosemary agreed, though joining a sorority had never appealed to her. “But here you don’t get any of that stuff so why bother with the studying?” "Welllllll," Alice drawled. In truth, she'd been wondering the same thing lately, especially after her conversation with Tim and Apollo's announcement about training. "It's something to do. Like, I got to study stuff that could help me with my powers if I ever got to, like, use them, and it sort of, like -- breaks up the monoto --" She stumbled over the word. "Monotony. But, like, what am I ever going to do with a degree? It's not like we can get real jobs in here, right?" “Exactly,” she replied. “Your degree is just going to go to waste working in the cafe or the store, what’s the point in even trying?” Usually, Rosemary tried to be positive but she thought she had a pretty good point here and that her friends should therefore increase their free time by cutting out study. "If I studied library science or English, maybe it could help me with my current job," Alice suggested. "I'd have to start all my credits over, but I have all the time in the woooooorld." She reached for her cup, but as she went to take a sip, she saw it was empty and set it, wobbling, back down again. "What about you?" she asked. "You could be soooooo great at Capers." "Or you could just not study and become my professional drink tester," she offered as an alternate suggestion. "And I would be awesome at Capers, but they always seem to have enough bartenders." Plus she'd probably abuse her role and not serve alcohol responsibly but she was sure the customers would love that even if higher-ups wouldn't. “I'm happy to test for you as an amateur!” Alice giggled. “But if you want the job, you should go for it. It's so perfect! You'd be better than aaaaanyone they have now.” She beamed. “Except Joey,” she added, as an afterthought. Alice couldn't imagine anyone would be better than him. “He's so great. But do you think you'd do it?” “If I can’t compete with Joey, there’s not much point trying,” Rosemary replied with a laugh. “But maybe. We’ll see. Not like we’re at a shortage of time to change our minds about what we want to do around here.” “Yep! All the time in the woooooorld,” Alice repeated nodding emphatically in agreement. She reached for her cup and looked into the empty bottom. “I think -- hic -- maybe I should get some water now.” “So responsible,” Rosemary teased, standing up so she could get Alice the water. As funny as it would be to see Alice attempt to stand up in this state, she wasn’t such a bad friend that she was going to potentially let her friend hurt herself for her own amusement. “Sure you don’t want me to give it more of a kick?” she added as she filled up a cup with water and brought it back for Alice. "Oh nooooo,” Alice drawled. She took the cup in her hands and sipped room it with drunken carefulness. “You have kicked me enough today. I mean, like, not literally kicking me, but you know.” She hiccuped again. “I ‘ppreciate it.” “Anytime,” Rosemary replied with a smile. “Especially if it’s instead of studying.” |
