At 3:00 PM: “Recorded from this phone, it’s John Arthur’s voicemail! Leave a message at the tone.” “That’s corny, Dad, even by my standards. Anyways, just calling to let you know that the Lock is now out of lockdown. See that? I could have made a joke about it being unlocked, but I chose not to. Uh, so I’m free tomorrow afternoon, so if you want to get together for lunch to plan for Mom’s surprise-- [The clicking and whirring of a shop. The voice of a female newscaster. Gasps, a muffled swear from someone close to the mouthpiece.] "Oh god. Dad, where--"[Beep. “You have reached the maximum amount of time for a message. Press ‘1’ if you would like to re-record your message. Press ‘2’ if you would like to call…”] At 3:01 PM: “Recorded from this phone, it’s John Arthur’s voicemail! Leave a message at the tone.” “Dad? It’s Evie. I saw the newscast. Where are you? Call me back, please.” At 3:10 PM: “Recorded from this phone, it’s John Arthur’s voicemail! Leave a message--” At 3:15 PM: “Hi, you’ve reached Jennifer. Please leave your name, message and phone number, and I’ll get back to you.” “Mom? I saw the news, I can’t get through to Dad. I keep, I keep trying to remember if you guys have online or on-campus lectures today. I mean, that would explain why your phones are off. But I, I don’t remember. I need you or Dad to call me back, okay? Just, as soon as you’re safe. I love you guys." At 4:00 PM: “Hello?” “Evie? It’s Dad.” “Oh my, oh god.” [A series of short, gulping breaths. Evie’s somewhere between laughter and tears.] “Are you okay? Is Mom with you?” “Mom’s with me, sweetie, we’re safe. They had us turn off our phones in the shelter. It’s okay, we’re okay. They’re canceling classes and we’re heading home now.” “Can you stay on the line? I know, talking is probably the last thing you and Mom--” “Hold on. Talking to you would be the highlight of our day, believe me. Now, what do you want to talk about?” “Everything. Anything.” |
