The End
[Private to the leadership council of Wanda's colony]
You were right. I shouldn't have poked into the technology situation.
But I was right too. Some of our neighbors are friendly, and interested in importing the technology, if it can be done.
Here's who I think can be trusted:
[list of names]
Don't expect me back. I ... my stardrive is damaged, and I don't know where I am. There is no way you can do anything, so don't try. You'd only endanger yourselves.
But I just wanted to say thank you for letting me be a part of the colony. You'll never know how much it meant to me, to have that to work for. Keep it going, please. Make the planet green. The galaxy needs more hope.
[Private to Pietro Maximoff]
Oh, Pietro...
I do not know if you will ever come here and be able to read this, but if you do, I think it will be better for you to know what happened. I do not want you to come and see that I was here and read everything that I have written -- every update I wrote with you in the back of my mind, so that if you arrived here, you would know that I was here and what I was doing and so you would be able to track me.
I do not want you to have to read something that ends with no explanation and to come to your own conclusions --
Who knows what that would be!
Instead, I will tell you everything, and then you will know. I believe it will be better to know, even though my situation, it is not good.
I am in a ship, in the middle of space, and the stardrive, what makes it travel between the stars, it is broken. But I am not without hope; only think, perhaps before I die I will be sent back to the world where we were born, where a future awaits me. I know a little about it, and it is full of strife, but I think I can survive that. I can survive anything.
So do not think I am dead, only misplaced. That is what I have thought of you, much of the time that I have been here. Even when...
Listen to me, separation is hard, and hope is harder. Do not hope too hard, do not let it paralyze you, only remember that I have managed for almost two years. It is possible.
I promise, do you hear me.
But I do miss you, Pietro. I miss you dearly.
You will also be wondering about this galaxy. If you are not, start wondering now. I do not want to bore you, and this galaxy is not boring. It is worth a little wonder.
First, my colony. I ... needed a home. I think you will understand that. I have not been entirely honest with them. If you come, perhaps you will want to visit them, but... If they tell you about me, and you don't recognize me...
Well, do you remember that time when we left Sokovia to live with our distant cousin in Prague? Do you remember all the rules, and how we followed them for a time, and whispered when no one was looking and got into trouble, but only when no one was looking. We wanted to be Czechs on the outside, we thought that we could leave Sokovia behind, piece by piece. No more war. We never did.
But if you talk with my fellow colonists, think that they know the Wanda who smiled at cousin Anezka, that is all, and perhaps for them you also should be the Pietro who charmed her. If you do that, I think you will like my colony. I think you will like the dream that we have dreamed, of a new world, green and growing where once it was wind-scored and dead.
But do not think that they knew me, and do not listen to what they tell you about me.
And perhaps...perhaps if you come to my colony, you should talk to them more openly. I always wanted to, but... it was always too late. I had deceived them too long, and I did not want to have to feel their minds change when they knew that I was...as I am.
I wanted them to think they knew me, when I knew them so much better.
How much there is crushed inside of me that no one here has seen. You would laugh, and tease me until I let it out. I am laughing, Pietro I am laughing thinking about how you would laugh. We laugh together, in my mind. I have missed you.
I am still me inside, the me that only you knew, but it has been hard with no one to talk to.
So if you come here, I think that you should find a way...
On second thought, I don't think this will be your problem. I will not tell you what to do.
But I will tell you that if you come to my colony, the second place I have truly called home, you can depend on the people of this colony to welcome you, and to put you to work, to treat you fairly and divide the scarce resources without bias, and they will not let anyone starve, and they will be happy with very little, and they will be loyal.
That is what I cared about when I first came here, and that is what they have given me without stinting. I have no complaints about the life I have lived, except that I was not able to accomplish more for them.
But if you do not want to live in a colony away from everything, I also know some traders. I did not part on bad terms from them; if you mention my name they may give you some help starting out.
Perhaps that would be wise, because traders are less likely to be affected by the war. They live on ships, and can change their routes.
The war. The war... But I will tell you what I think you need to know, despite all feelings.
The war has many sides, but there are three main sides that I have heard of. One of the sides is called the First Order, and they have destroyed worlds for bragging rights. They are the ones that everyone fears, and that is a power that I understand. Even where they do not rule, they rule minds with fear.
The other side is called the Republic, and they are often described as corrupt. They are not loved, they are not noticeably just, and they were the government that the First Order acted against.
There is a further side called the Resistance, and they...remind me of HYDRA. They seem very plausible, but the only thing they promise is to fight the First Order. It is exactly the same promise that HYDRA gave us, to help us fight the enemies of our country.
The First Order, I believe, is the most dangerous, the Resistance next in danger because they seem to have some capacity to act in destructive ways, and the Republic the least because they are still struggling to assemble their full forces.
I have no desire to fight for the sake of fighting. Do you? I hope that you don't either, but you have not experienced everything that I have experienced. You...may choose differently. You may think that you can save them, the people of this galaxy, and if you think that, I do not think that you will hesitate.
I do not think that the galaxy can be saved. Too many planets, and they are too set on having a war. They think the important thing about a war is winning it, not preventing the next one. How can such people be saved?
But if you think there is hope in fighting, you will fight, and if you do...
If you do, I would pick the HYDRA option once again. The Resistance. The First Order destroys, that is all they do, and I do not believe anything they say about order. The Republic will tie you up in tape and that is the very last thing that you can stand. They are slow and greedy and they will keep you in one place, slow and vulnerable, and you will die. Please, Pietro, do not try to fight for them.
HYDRA was effective; they gave us powers. They did not mean us well, but they were a tool that we used in the same way that we were a tool that they used. If you remember this, you may manage to survive the Resistance. Make them respect you, and insist that they use you the way that you will be effective. But never let them use you too much, do not be a pawn, or they will sacrifice you and you will die.
Do not let them slow you down. Never, never, never let anyone slow you down, Pietro, or catch you in a place that you can't move, or trap or bait you. Always be ready to move. Get the fastest ship you can, and make sure you know how to turn off the anti-gravity and the failsafes for acceleration. With your powers, you do not need these failsafes any more than I do, much less, because I can only protect my body against acceleration with concentration, it is difficult for me and not perfect, but your speed would protect you automatically.
Learn to pilot it and be faster than anyone in space. No one will expect it, they know the limits of their ships and if you exceed them -- this is how I escaped the attack that was meant to kill me, though the first attack damaged the engine enough that it failed before I reached my destination. You can do better, and you must. It is a dangerous galaxy.
But there are some people here that perhaps you can trust, at least a little. I told one of them about you. Her name is Buffy Summers, and she is a vampire slayer. I killed evil vampires with her, and I ... I told her about you, and I would trust her, and I think you can too.
Some of the Avengers are also here.
When the Avengers first started arriving, I ... Well, I was an Avenger, for a time, before I came here, after the destruction of Sokovia. Yes, I became an Avenger, back in the world we were born in. They were kind to me then, and they gave me a purpose, and ...
I don't know any more. They hate HYDRA, casually, as someone might hate venomous snakes or stinging scorpions or anything that can bring only evil, and do not seem to remember that I was HYDRA. That my powers are the work of HYDRA. That I volunteered.
I do not understand them. They all joined the resistance, as easily as anything, just because it was there. But I do not think they were doing it as an exchange, I think they were doing it because they believed in it. They believe that there is a right side, in a war. That you can trust the right side, only because they have the same enemy. That is what it sounded like to me.
They hate HYDRA, but they joined the resistance. How does that make sense, Pietro?
I do not know what they think of me, I have been to afraid to ask, afraid that I would reveal myself as their enemy that they hate. Afraid that if they knew what I really think, they would ... they know many of my secrets. I haven't wanted to risk it.
Perhaps they think that I too hate HYDRA, now. Perhaps they think that I have rejected everything...
It is so difficult to know what is right, Pietro. But I cannot forget the part of myself that was HYDRA, or even pretend to reject it unless there is a very good reason. Unless I must, to survive. But I cannot reject HYDRA without rejecting power, and I cannot reject power without rejecting myself, and you, and everything we dreamed about together for ourselves and our country. Not everything we dreamed about was destructive.
I have rejected revenge, because it is destruction, and tried to use my powers only ... only in ways that I will not regret, I have been careful, so careful. But ... I am still HYDRA. I am powerful, and I am capable of using this power for my own reasons.
So the Avengers are dangerous to me. I think they will also be dangerous to you, but they are also ready to be allies if you are willing to toe their line in the sand. And if you have great need, it is possible that they will help you. Clint Barton feels guilty about you, you might be able to use that to keep safe. And I have ... I have not hinted about the content of my thoughts, though I ... I tried to warn one of them that she might not like me as much as she thought she would. I could not stand the thought of using her, and I did not need the help she was offering.
But if the war comes, or if you choose to join the fight, they might help to keep you safe. It is worth having allies, if the war comes. I have done nothing that I think would jeopardize calling upon them, I am not so stupid as that. And if you must, go to Clint Barton. He ... he has also been kind to me, and I think he will be especially well disposed to you. I have not met Natasha Romanoff in this galaxy, so I cannot tell you anything of her mind, but she tells me that she and I were on different sides in an Avengers conflict. She didn't seem angry, but she would not be my first choice. Steve Rogers has left this galaxy, but if he returns, he would be a good option as well. Just do not let him know if you disagree with something he believes in. Do not let any of them know. They will not be your enemies if you do not make them. They have not been mine, but I have been very careful.
There are also some SHIELD agents, and I think you would be wise to stay far away from them. They hate HYDRA more than most, and they are all sure to be dangerous.
Stay alive, Pietro, that is all I ask of you.
No, do not laugh gently and ignore me because I have no right to expect it of you when I am dying in a broken ship that is leaking air through a million tiny holes that even I cannot plug entirely. You died, Pietro, in the world we were born in, and even if you can't remember it, believe me. It is true.
I felt it. And that is why I have every right to tell you to stay alive, if you are reading this. Live, and live well.
That is what I have tried to do.
For my sake, Pietro, do not sacrifice yourself to this war, or to the Avengers, or to anything. Do not sacrifice yourself to revenge. Do not seek death. I promise you that I have not. Death has come to find me, but only because I alive, and everything that lives must die sometime.
I am begging you, with death in front of meI can feel the pieces of the ship quivering, I cannot hold them tightly enough to keep the air in for much longer
Live, Pietro.
That is all I ask.
And do not be too angry with me for dying. It doesn't help anything. It only makes it harder.
I'm glad I ... I'm glad I said this to you, even if you never hear it.
And Pietro? I forgive you for dying.
Please forgive me.
