Future!Kathryn-centric, prompt #52 "Masquerade"
Kathryn took a look around as she entered the ballroom. The room was awash in colour, masks hiding the identity of everybody's faces as they twirled across the dance floor. She looked up to Miles, a faint smile on her lips. It had been years since she'd been to one of these, and she had to admit that she was rather looking forward to the evening. Of course, the two weren't there simply for fun. They also had a job to do. Her blood was practically buzzing in anticipation. Not for the kill- no, that was simply a job, something that they had to do. But for after, when they would turn to each other, high on adrenaline and simply wanting to feel. She had met the mark once before, though she didn't know a whole lot about him. She didn't care to. It would be easy, she was sure, between her and Miles. Her hand was at Miles' arm as they descended the staircase into the crowd, and her free hand moved up to rest at his elbow, applying a light pressure to indicate that she had seen the mark. A slight nod in his direction, and Miles was able to spot him as well. They danced for hours, never letting the mark out of their sight. At one point, they switched dance partners, and Kathryn did her best to be charming and flirtatious, wanting him to let his guard down. A smile remained on her lips as she felt the gaze of her husband on her. The mark, not knowing she was married, invited her for a walk through the gardens. She agreed, taking his arm as she let him lead her outside. He led her across the expansive grounds and into the garden maze, doing all the talking. It was easy, Kathryn thought, to get a man like him to open up. All she had to do was pretend that she was interested in what he had to say, and he would go on and on. After a while, she slowed to a stop, pretending to be fascinated with some of the rose bushes that grew tall around them. He turned toward her, starting another story, and she turned back to him, bringing a finger up to his lips to quiet him. Her hand moved up to remove his mask, and she slowly reached up to remove her own. He deserved to see his killer before he died, after all. A slight tilt of her head and a teasing smile on her lips, she slid one hand up his arm to rest at his shoulder, leaning up as though she had a secret for him. "Avada Kedavra," she whispered, her wand pointed to his middle. He had no time to react before he crumpled, dead before he had even hit the ground. Scrunching her nose up in distaste, Kathryn stepped back from the body. She couldn't help but laugh when she saw her husband standing in front of her, a rather smug expression on his face. It didn't take them long to have the body properly disposed of- it was all quick, easy, and painless, just as she had known it would be. Tucking her wand back into its hiding spot, she reached for Miles and slid his mask off as she pulled him down for a kiss. Oh yes. It was going to be a wonderful evening. |
