Who: Maphia What: Malachi has a surprise, and so does Sophia Where: Beginning at their flat in Galway When: May 2002
They'd been married- well, publicly, at least, for just over a year. Privately, of course, it was a few months longer than that. Malachi, for his part, still couldn't believe it at times- he'd catch sight of the ring on Sophia's finger and sweep her up into a kiss that (he imagined) left her a bit bewildered, and left him grinning, awfully pleased with himself. He was happy, truly happy, and he couldn't imagine things being any differently.
He was walking to the market, having gotten the idea to surprise Sophia with flowers, when he saw it. To anyone else, it would have likely been a rather unremarkable house at the end of a block, but Malachi noticed the "For Sale" sign in the window and had to stop. By chance (or fate, even), there was an official-looking woman in the doorway. When she noticed him, she turned, calling over, "Are you in the market, dearie?"
Malachi jumped, he hadn't expected anyone to stop him. "Er, no- I'm married," he explained, looking back to the woman a bit nervously.
She just laughed. "I meant for the house, love! Come in- I'll show you around."
He couldn't turn her down, and half an hour later Malachi left, a bit more of a spring in his step and a key in his pocket. He'd paid the woman a holding fee, she'd called it- enough to give him a key and a grace period to show the place to Sophia. He'd been tempted to buy it straight off, but on the chance that Sophia wouldn't like it, he'd refrained.
It wasn't long before he was home, flowers in hand as he nudged the door closed behind him with his foot. "Sophia, love? Are you here?"
