John took a whiff of his glass, mostly to humor his new companion, before knocking back a decent belt. It wasn't the worst thing he'd ever consumed - that list was a mile long, at least - but it certainly wasn't the smoothest, either. Still, there was something about the burn that he enjoyed, and he set the glass down with an appreciative smile.
"John," he replied, offering his hand in introduction. "I guess you could say I'm retired, at least for now."
He gave his glass a little swirl, contemplating taking another sip, but deciding it was smarter to wait until the first had settled. It wasn't whiskey, but at this stage in his adjustment, he wasn't going to be too picky about what was available to take some of the edge off.
"I take it you've been around the galaxy a couple of times," he said. "Although I'm guessing you're one of the special types they told me about, since you can drink that stuff like it's water."
