Buffy & Selene
"I suppose you don't live as long as I have without developing a certain degree of insanity. Did I mention he is a younger cousin?"
She gestured to the small silver cross that hung from her neck. "Years ago, I would have debated the idea of a soul. Now, I may answer to only my own conscience, but I believe one day my soul will be judged. Your evidence seems to support that belief."
Selene nodded. "I started out as a bounty hunter. Having a certain durability gave me an advantage on difficult contracts. Collections, ship repossessions, things like that. I bought my ship from a salvage yard and spent almost ten years spending every credit I made on her refit and upgrades. It takes a while to bootstrap yourself; I have the advantage of a different time frame. Profits are bigger now, but so are my expenses. So too, are the dangers. What sort of a ship do you have? It might be worth my while to pay to have some work done on it in return for a share of your profits. That is the deal I made with Quill. I am paying for his fighter; he will buy it from me out of his share of the profits. A fleet can take on bigger jobs than an individual ship."
She laughed softly. "I, too, suffer from Oppositional Defiance Disorder. I can't take stupid orders from stupid people. As a result, I do my best to avoid giving stupid orders."
"And speaking of my cousin, should we head inside? There is a small office just off the cargo bay where we can talk privately."
