"Forgive," River repeated, chuckling a little at the thought. She was still so consumed by the fear of what she had become, it had never even crossed her mind to consider forgiving the people who were responsible. They, of course, would never forgive her for leaving, or for revealing one of their darker secrets. But governments weren't really capable of forgiveness.
"It's okay," she assured Wanda. "I'm not either." It may have been an obvious statement, but it was one that seemed proper to give voice to. Somewhere, all the social manners she'd learned at the estate still rattled around, even if they were mostly collecting dust under the bad habits she'd picked up from Mal, Zoe, and Kaylee.
Her gaze swept up to the sky for a moment, then back in the general direction she'd come from. "I should go back now," she said, looking back to Wanda one last time. "I'm sorry for spying. But I won't tell anyone. I promise."
