Leia put down her data pad and leaned her head back against the chair for a moment. It was late, she should have retired to her quarters hours ago but she couldn't. There was still so much to be done, things to be organized, transports that hadn't arrived yet, how could she sleep? She'd already had a conversation about this with Luke who had a tendency to pop into her head about the same time every night to see if she was taking care of herself. She pretended to be annoyed but the truth was she was grateful for it. After Han's death she had suddenly found herself in a place she hadn't been in a very long time. Adrift in the galaxy with no idea where to turn. Luke's return had been a welcome relief. She was glad to have someone to bounce ideas off of again, someone who understood her even if they had been unaware of each other for the first nineteen years of their lives. She sighed and got up, stretching and making a face as a pain shot through her lower back. I'm not as young as I used to be, she thought. 56 standard years wasn't really that old given the life span of humans these days but Leia knew she was lucky to have survived this long. She'd led a dangerous life for many years and while her time in the Senate hadn't been exactly dangerous, there was always the risk of assassination attempts and the like. Now of course she was right back where she'd started. In charge of a Rebellion (for even if they didn't call it that, what else was it if not that?) against a far larger group with far more firepower. And of course a Supreme Leader who appeared to be a Dark Jedi of some description. Yet another difference. With the Rebellion, she'd been facing her birth father and hadn't known it. This time, she was facing a man who had taken control of her son. Leia wasn't sure what hurt the most, knowing that Snoke had targeted Ben from an early age or the fact that she hadn't noticed anything was wrong. How had she missed it? That at least she knew. She'd missed it because she didn't want to see it, didn't want to believe that her son would travel the path that his grandfather had taken but he had and she couldn't change that. She glanced around her office, making sure there wasn't anything that she needed to take back with her and when she was satisfied, she said "Lights," and the room was dark. She left the office, making sure to lock it behind her and walked across the compound to her quarters. Tomorrow was another day with much to be done. For now she would try to relax and face tomorrow...tomorrow. |
